Thomas Tuchel is currently undergoing the usual post-tournament review for an England head coach with his employers, the FA, as per the excellent @SamWallaceTel. All the talk about squad selection and travel distance from World Cup base are side issues. The review should all be about Konsa for Gordon (72) in the World Cup semi-final in Atlanta. No disrespect to Konsa, an outstanding defender, but Tuchel’s calamitous decision removed England’s best pacey, attacking outlet who was terrifying Argentina’s defence. Sent an encouraging message to Argentina: we’re going to try to shut up shop (against Messi, good luck). Sent a negative message to England players. How much will the FA focus on this decision? They are hardly going to give him a hard time. They gave Tuchel a new contract before the World Cup, against all lessons from history (hello Capello; break clause removed in 2010). FA improved Tuchel’s contract in length and strength before his ability in crunch moments was properly tested. FA can herald third place, a best finish since 66, when everyone knows that England wasted their best opportunity since 66 because of Tuchel’s second-half caution. Rashford and Toney didn’t come on until England were 2-1 down, Saka stayed on bench. Disastrous. FA staff met with Tuchel last week. He will discuss matters with the FA’s performance advisory board next week. The chair, Jobi McAnuff, is a shrewd judge, obviously knows the game. Ditto Sarina Wiegman. Sir Kevin Sinfield has an elite sporting mindset. The other members, Sir Michael Barber, Manoj Badale, Colonel Lucy Giles and Damian Hughes, are very impressive in their own fields but judging an England manager? They could do with an England fan in there, giving some home truths. It is not to the FA that Tuchel has to explain himself. It is to the England players, some of whom were bemused at his changes against Argentina, and others were surprised at Tuchel’s criticism of their DNA; these are good players, some of them title winners, Champions League winners, wanting England to stay on the front foot as in the first half. Kane, a Tuchel supporter, confirmed recently there will be discussions, reflecting on the summer, during the forthcoming international break. It is to the England fans that Tuchel also has to explain himself. Fans who spent fortunes to get to games in the US and Mexico. Many of whom supported the team through qualifying, supported them through the lengthening years of hurt. Only to be let down by Tuchel’s second-half changes. Tuchel was brought in because his career indicated he was a master of game-management (Chelsea, 2021 CL final etc). He has so many questions to answers. Anger remains because it was such a self-inflicted wasted opportunity. When will England get this chance again. Kane will be 36 in 2030 and who looks like being his successor at No 9? Nobody anywhere near close to the great man. England would probably still have lost the final against Spain, the best team in the tournament. But it would have been good to have found out. #ENG

Argentina throwing punches at the FT whistle according to Alan Shearer. Look how they reacted to beating England too. An absolute disgrace. Got exactly what they deserved today, too. Nowt.

The Argentina player used his studs to step on Yamal’s calf. According to the rules, this is supposed to be a red card but the referee didn’t even show him a yellow. SPAIN ARE GETTING ROBBED!!!

Before #FIFA start pumping the propaganda tonight and telling us all how amazing this #WorldCup has been, let’s remember they oversaw: - highest ticket prices ever and took a cut from resale sites. - did nothing about Somalian referee and dozens of staff who were banned from entering the US for no legitimate reason. - stood by as Iran were forced to train outside the US and travel in on match days. - overturned red cards after phone calls with the president. - Americanised the beautiful game with hydration (TV) breaks and 25 mins half time in the final - guided Argentina through the tournament with less travel, VAR support and blatantly turning a blind due to their aggression and foul play.

Saka has 3 goals today but England fans are suppose to believe he wasn’t fit enough for one single minute against Argentina? Idk how England fans can justify keeping Tuchel

I've never stopped watching an England game because I'm too annoyed about how well it's going, but this could be a first. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

I know this is versus a very demoralised French team, but if I were an England fan I’d be very pissed off. A lot of how the squad is lined up now is how Tuchel probably should have lined up for a lot of the tournament, and how he should have reacted when England came under pressure vs. Argentina to regain some midfield control.

This is getting kind of annoying now. This is becoming that meme with England being third place spraying champagne everywhere.

Sack Tuchel tonight. No point him being here if he's just going to do that. Get out

"The decisions Thomas Tuchel made, we have to be honest on this, have cost us tonight." 😬 Wayne Rooney believes England's switch to a back five is what proved costly.

I think that is close to sackable from Tuchel. A coach appointed at great expense for his tactical acumen and "ability to get over the line" needlessly forces England miles from it. All that money... for that?

This is so much worse than Croatia eight years ago. England were a better team here, in a better position, with better options. And they just decided to do nothing after going 1-0 up. Back five tactics as if this was just endless crosses to Raul Jimenez again.

He came in when they were at rock bottom. He turned them around. He delivered an enormous victory. But they’ve grown tired of the boring playing style so they’re going to get rid of him. It doesn’t always work out for the best…

Replying to @alexwickham
Congratulations Labour MPs who are calling for Starmer to go, you fell into the rightwing trap hook, line and sinker. You've been played by your political opponents and you're so consumed with hate for your own side, you didn't even realise. teapawt.net/alexwickham/status/205…
Final thought tonight: Reform and Conservative sources are jubilant. Their plan all along has been to try to help destabilise Starmer so much that Labour MPs force him out, believing all along that a change of leader will bring chaos from which they won’t recover.
