Basically, American copyright law is so mad and so aimed at protectionism, that McDonald's couldn't fix their own ice cream machines because you'd be "modifying a copyright" by fixing the machine.
That's why you can't have a McFlurry.
McDonald's, $MCD, franchisees now have the right to repair their own ice cream machines, per the FTC.
