Such great news for all of us in the UK!
NON COMPETES BANNED Today, the PM has announced that his Government will legislate to functionally ban non-compete agreements for startups and scaleups in the UK or as he called it - the Bosman ruling for ruling for the innovation sector' 😂 At the @StartupCltn been working on this for months and we think it’s a huge potential unlock for our tech ecosystem. Here’s what you need to know… - Measures to functionally ban non-competes for startups and scaleups in the UK are going to be set out. - There will also be consultation on a wider set of restrictive practices including gardening leave. - More detail on these plans at the budget in a few weeks (Wednesday 28th October) including a timetable for consultation with a view to legislation in the coming months. We think this is a huge move and so do lots of friends including so many of the great founders that signed the letter with Inherent just the other week. Why? Because talent matters and mobile talent means startups can build. The Valley was built on free-flowing talent. In the UK, we’re now seeing our own versions of this story with companies being built from alumni of both homegrown firms like Revolut and beyond. But we need that to move faster. Hiring and building faster means British startups and scaleups can grow faster. Barriers to that slow our ecosystem down. We won’t pretend it will be perfect, and people (including some of our friends but also lots of fairly vested interests too) will have a right to disagree. But we think that startups will thrive and win in a faster paced Britain. So we are delighted with the progress today - as part of a strong speech by the PM outlining his ambition for building the world’s leading innovation nation including more on tax, growing companies outside London and more. But this is the start, not the end of the process. The announcement launches a consultation. It doesn't mean the issue is settled. How far reform goes, and what it looks like on the ground, is still to be decided. The Prime Minister today has done something that can materially impact the trajectory of the UK tech ecosystem and with it our economy - but only if we make sure it’s delivered. So, the real work starts now.

i'm sure the ability to fabricate convincing historical footage that eventually drifts across the internet, where it's picked up by people who present them as real, at a time when trust in educational and media institutions is already eroding, will prove to be a net positive
Turns out that Flux 3 is exceptional at generating historical footage... like elementary school students in the '90s predicting how we'll use computers. (the last girl is my favorite!)

Many many years ago, I learnt Hebrew out of curiosity, and in a bid to penetrate into a world that I once thought was evil and conspiring against Arabs and Muslims. Once in, I was surprised how wrong I was, how wrong almost every Arab and Muslim around me was. These days, I watch Hebrew networks (and Arabic ones). There is a lot of Israeli pain over those who were killed on 10/7, agony of those who survived, and anxiety over those who are held hostage by Hamas. A lot of tears, now mixing with tears over fallen soldiers fighting in Gaza. The thing about all this Israeli pain is that it is almost exclusively in Hebrew. The world does not see Israelis hurt, does not hear them cry. The world sees Israel as fighter jets raining death to punish those who killed them from 15000 feet above ground. The world only sees and hears pain coming from Gaza, and the world always takes the side of the underdog, even when the underdog is guilty. One billion Muslims certainly have a much louder voice than 20 million Jews, and the world will always blame Israel, even when Palestinians started the carnage. And that's exactly why Israelis are fighting the fight of their lives. They understand that the world is an unfair place, and that they cannot rely on non-existent international justice or biased global opinion. I wish I had a magic wand to make fellow Arabs, and the rest of the world, see what I see. There will never be peace without justice, and using our numbers (Muslims) to impose our narrative is one way to try to beat Israel, but not the way to peace. My voice will dissent. I want peace, and peace is incumbent on winning the trust of those we want to live in peace with, not keeping on instigating the world against them.

Had the pleasure of bumping into @chrisyeh at the @raiseconference in Sf last week - I mentioned Blitzscaling was on our main bookshelf in London and he was kind enough to give us a signed bookmark to go inside. Thanks Chris! @HoxtonVentures

So, is it Hassan Nasrallah, Ali Karaki or Abu Ali Rida who has been the deep cover Mossad agent for the last 40 years? I'm only asking questions...

Everyone who thinks AI will replace software engineers are: —VCs investing in those startups —Founders / employees of those startups —AI influencers who hype everything —People who wish they majored in CS —People who hate techbros Real SWEs are like "well.. it's kinda helpful".

OH from an LP: "The first thing I look at in a venture fund is who owns the management company. The higher the % employees at the firm who have a stake in the ManCo, the better. If you see a big fund with lots of people, but only 1-2 owners, run away as fast as you can"

Be careful if you use Raivo as your two-factor app on iOS. They just pushed a major change, moved to a paid model and require re-login which if you don't have you're screwed. If the app hasn't updated, open it ASAP and export your data then use 2FAS app instead.

Certainly not what I expected. Wonder how non USA compares
When I was at Uber, we ran the numbers on the maps app offering the shortest routes We prob had the biggest dataset with this info: we had millions of trips where we knew both which app was used and how long they took Now this may be shocking, but the ranking was: 1. Best: Apple Maps 2. Second: Google Maps 3. Worst: Waze (by far) The research also included which apps people *thought* was worse, and the order came in the exact opposite order. We understood why Apple Maps got a bad rap given how bad it was at launch — it rapidly got better, but the brand stuck. Waze was more of a mystery, and we ended up realizing that people thought its routes were best because it was exposing them to so much info on traffic, construction, police presence etc… Everyone thinks they want a minimalist UI, but in practice, when they see all this info, they subconsciously conclude “wow, these guys really have their shit together” — even when the routes were actually the worst ones. (This research was done maybe 8y ago, wouldn’t be surprised if these rankings were different today.)
