Opening blocked arteries saves lives, but can also cause hidden damage called ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI), with no approved therapy. The University of Utah is proving a faster, scalable way to move discoveries from lab to patient.

Dr. Mike Groff offered a special kindness and approachability to those in the Boston neurosurgery community and beyond. Extending heartfelt condolences to the @MGBneurosurgery community, the Groff family, and the many who Mike touched with his leadership, mentorship, and humanity.
It is with great sadness that we share about the tragic loss of Dr. Mike Groff, 3 members of his family including Dr. Joy Saini his wife who was a NWH UroGyn physician, their daughter Karenna who was an incoming PGY1 neurosurgery resident at NYU, their son Jared and 2 of their friends.
Mike served as the Division Chief of Neurosurgery Spine at BWH from 2011 until 2024 as well as the Vice Chair of Neurosurgery at BWH. He was an Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at Harvard Medical School. In 2024 he became the Executive Medical Director of Neuroscience Rochester Regional Health, while retaining his HMS position during the transition.
Mike was an internationally recognized thought leader in spinal disorders. He was the doctor’s doctor and led the Neurosurgery Research and Education Foundation. He was in several leadership position within AANS, including being the Chair of the Spine Section of AANS/CNS.
Most of all, Mike was a compassionate, highly skilled and charismatic human being and neurosurgeon. He and his family will be sorely missed.
As we grieve the loss of Mike, Joy, Karenna, Jared and their 2 friends, our hearts go out to their family in this time of profound sadness.
