There's been racist rioting in Southport, Hartlepool, and Whitehall. Why? Because the terrible, brutal murder of children (like the disorder in Harehills last week) is being blamed on Muslims. I don't think these pricks represent their communities any more than fundamentalists do mine. But they've been encouraged by mainstream sections of the press, and politicians, for decades. "Stop the boats", which they were chanting outside Downing Street, isn't an extremist slogan. It was on Rishi Sunak's lectern. It was what you'd hear on Question Time, Sky News, and talk radio. Footage of rioters laughing as a non-white man got punched in the face, just for walking down the street in Hartlepool, disgusts and enrages me. And I imagine for a lot of POC, it makes us wonder where's safe. I know others might disagree with me, but it's times like these when it's most important to resist the lure of separatism. We need a multiracial, multicultural, antiracist movement. We need to stand up for each other. And we need to take on the far-right wherever they are.
