As we launch the fifth cohort of the Accelerator Mentorship Programme for Women-led SMEs in Africa, I’m reminded of what makes these women so remarkable. Businesses led by participants in previous cohorts have created over 70,000 jobs, reached more than 550,000 farmers and provided nutritious food to over 10 million people. If you let them do what they do best and make their networks a little bigger and give them advice here and there, they will shine! If there’s one word I’d use to describe #AFSF2026, it’s inspiring. From the young GoGettaz, to the amazing women agripreneurs, to Agri-Connect, the theme of investment came through. Over 5,700 attendees from 118 countries came together in Kigali to share ideas, build connections and explore new approaches to investing in Africa’s #FoodSystems. It was a spirit of new approaches, a recognition of lessons learned and fresh methods more thoroughly rooted in business and value chains. Healthy rangelands are about far more than land. They are about livelihoods, food systems, economic opportunity, biodiversity, and resilience. Today, I joined partners in Nairobi for the Stakeholders Roundtable on Rangelands, Sustainable Livestock and Drought Resilience in Kenya, held as part of the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP 2026). The conversation brought together a remarkable range of voices, from pastoral communities and researchers to government leaders, investors, and private sector representatives. Several priorities stood out: •⁠ ⁠Empowering communities to lead rangeland restoration and management •⁠ ⁠Securing land rights and strengthening governance systems •⁠ ⁠Expanding innovative approaches such as early warning systems and index-based livestock insurance •⁠ ⁠Increasing investment in sustainable livestock value chains •⁠ ⁠Building resilience to drought through stronger partnerships and better planning •⁠ ⁠Bridging traditional knowledge and scientific innovation to support pastoral livelihoods One message was clear throughout the discussion: investing in rangelands is not simply an environmental imperative. It is an investment in food security, economic growth, and the future of millions of people who depend on these landscapes every day.
