@NormanWhiteside was a hero of mine, and of MANY United fans by the mid-1980s. “The Youngest” broke a whole load of records as he trailblazed his way into English football’s highest echelons in 1982/83/84.
This piece tells the story of those early days,

To summarise Chris’ excellent piece: unless the Glazers sell up and piss off soon, Manchester United Football Club have a very, very bleak future.
A harrowing read. I despise those Yank vultures more than words can convey. 😡💔
We’re ruined.

If time is the great healer then 21 years isn't nearly enough at Old Trafford.
On the lengthening shadow of that Glazer takeover and how Manchester United's debt hurts the club now more than ever before

There is so much good, balanced and insightful about the BBC’s football coverage - John Murray, Ian Dennis, Guy Mowbray, Mark Chapman, Gabby Logan, Kelly Dalglish, Alan Shearer and plenty more, including hugely respected voices across local radio, Nick Barnes, Giulia Bould, Adam Blackmore, Nick Godwin and many others. The BBC has good reporters covering Manchester United but a usually excellent website’s daily focus on Michael Carrick’s job prospects – in, out, in out, it’s like the Boat Race – has become wearisome when the real focus should be more on the Glazers.
They are far more responsible for the systemic mess at United? The Glazers. Carrick may well be out of his depth in a job that has already defeated more famous managers. But he’s faced the challenge, and faced up to the media, with dignity.
All media obsesses about United (see my timeline tbf), always huge news. But the BBC, the national broadcaster, whose values include “the provision of impartial, high-quality and distinctive output”, has to be balanced - and never forget that there’s a human being in the headlines.
ABSOLUTELY SPOT ON; just read it, especially if you DO NOT attend United matches at Old Trafford…
#MUFC #GlazersOUT
I hear plenty of noise online about what matchgoers “ought” to do to force change, most notably demands that we leave Old Trafford empty or throw missiles onto the pitch to stop games.
If you don’t attend games regularly, it’s easy to look at things from a distance and assume it’s simply a matter of willpower. Here is the reality on the ground:
1. The “Boycott / Empty Seats” Myth
- The money is already banked: Around 46,000 seats belong to Season Ticket holders who pay in advance in May and June—before the previous season has even finished. Whether an ST holder sits in that seat or stays home, the Glazers already have the cash.
- Season ticket holders don’t control the stadium: If, on average, 20% of Season Ticket Holders forward or resell through official channels, you’re left with roughly half the stadium’s capacity. The remaining half of the capacity is filled by hospitality and general members paying premium prices, people who aren’t walking out or boycotting.
- Strict attendance enforcement: Season Ticket holders must physically attend or officially transfer at least 16 out of 19 Premier League home matches. If you fail to hit that threshold, the club revokes your ticket for the following season.
- You don’t create an empty stadium—you create a corporate one: With over 100,000 people on the waiting list and massive international tourism demand, any seat permanently vacated isn’t left empty. The club simply reclaims it and flips it into extortionate single-match membership prices or hospitality packages.
- The European comparison doesn’t work: Pointing to Serie A or the Bundesliga ignores the fundamental economics. Many of those clubs have cheap tickets, standing sections, and 50+1 fan ownership models. Old Trafford operates in a hyper-commercialised, sold-out market. Asking a local supporter to sacrifice a seat their family has held for 20, 30, or 40 years, only for it to be sold to a tourist five minutes later, gives the owners zero financial leverage.
2. Throwing Objects onto the Pitch
- It’s a specific criminal offence: Under the Football (Offences) Act 1991, throwing any missile onto the pitch or surrounding area is illegal.
- It ruins lives, not ownership: Old Trafford is blanketed by modern high-definition CCTV and facial recognition. Anyone caught doesn’t just face a club ban; they face mandatory court-issued Football Banning Orders (FBOs), the surrender of their passport during European fixtures, a criminal record, and potential loss of employment. Furthermore, with modern automated flagging and blanket ticketing investigations, which have been very poor on United’s part, when disorder breaks out, bystanders and innocent people nearby often get swept up in the fallout, losing access to tickets while lengthy club appeals grind on.
- Demanding that local matchgoers take on criminal records and jeopardise their livelihoods while you watch in a pub, on TV, or via an illegal stream isn’t a protest strategy; it’s completely detached from reality.
What Non-Matchgoers Can ACTUALLY Do to Hit the Model: The club’s ownership model is built on one thing: commercial monetisation of the global audience. That is where you have direct leverage.
- Hit the vanity metrics: Unfollow the club's official accounts on X, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. The club pitches these raw follower numbers to prospective commercial partners every day.
- Direct consumer feedback to commercial partners: Brands invest heavily for positive sentiment. When supporters collectively make it clear across sponsor channels that partnering with negligent ownership carries a reputational cost, commercial teams take notice.
- Starve the Megastore: Stop buying official kits, training apparel, and club subscriptions. If you want United gear, buy retro or support independent fan-made apparel.
- Back fan-led advocacy: Support independent fan media, fanzines, and the Supporters Trust. Collective, legal, and political pressure moves the needle; reckless armchair advice does not.
If we want change, it requires collective discipline across the entire fanbase—not asking matchgoers to commit financial or legal suicide just to make a 30-second point on television.
There’s no divide here: it isn’t matchgoers versus non-matchgoers; it’s all of us. If we aren’t united, we achieve nothing, and that failure rests on every single Manchester United supporter.

VAR "steps in" to award Roma the goal kick when it was CLEARLY their man who put it out for a corner... imbeciles.
@ChampionsLeague #MUFC
Don't know what is going on with Amad Diallo, but he's been so very, very poor again so far... can't beat a man.
There's not much left to say that hasn't been said already. The defence is shambolic, not helped by Baleba & Mainoo being anything but secure in possession, tho Mainoo has been our best player, despite that.
Cunha resembles a headless chicken; Mbeumo getting nothing off this
Italian defence. Bruno looks a frustrated player, the verbals going with the rest for poor service.
Dalot might be the thickest "footballer" I've ever seen.
It's a matter of how many Roma want to win by now. We're miles off this level.
Heartbroken.

It's the same message you give to kids learning the game: DON'T GIVE THE BALL AWAY.
Dalot nowhere to be seen for the opener; Maguire gives it away for the penalty...dire.

Manchester United need to be freed of the yoke of the Glazers. That’s obvious. Been saying it since 2005. But how? It’s difficult to force regime change. A few United fans suggesting they’d welcome relegation as it would make the Glazers consider selling up. It might make them more likely to hold on as a PL club worth far more than EFL. A few fans suggesting a boycott of games - but why should loyal fans stop watching their team? And the club could simply get tourists in if a few games missed.
A boycott of the megastore and catering is obvious (and already done by some fans) but that would also hit staff and temporary workers. Chants and banners make a point to the world how reviled the absentee Glazers are. But probably won’t worry the distant Glazers. They can point to money invested in transfers (and spent badly) but it’s not their personal money. It’s money generated by the fans.
United have some very influential fans’ groups, fanzines, forums and pods. Would lobbying the Independent Football Regulator about whether the Glazers are “fit and proper owners” (in old parlance) have any effect? At the very least, there is a strong case for lobbying the IFR and Government about updating legislation to preclude debt-based takeovers (the IFR has an advisory role to Parliament).
It’s certainly a national embarrassment that the most high-profile representative of the national sport has such substantial debt and such deeply unpopular owners associated with it. Sadly, like a stubborn stain, the Glazers will take some shifting. #MUFC

Manchester United fans defiant. Manchester United players defeatist. One day, United players will take responsibility, and will play with the commitment of their fans. Carlos Baleba, Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez failed to react for Chelsea’s first. Martinez so unprofessional for Chelsea’s second goal, elbow, second yellow, pen, shocking behaviour.
Michael Carrick has his flaws but he’s been let down by his players. United fans have been let down by their players. United can change the head coach but they have to change many of the players, recruiting stronger characters. Players who take responsibility, who care for the club. #CHEMUN #MUFC
