🚨𝗝𝗨𝗦𝗧 𝗜𝗡: @monzousa Bank pulls back from the US 🇺🇸 to refocus on Europe 🇪🇺
Here's what happened:
@monzo is shutting down its US operations after struggling for years to gain traction in the market.
The UK-based neobank will stop onboarding new customers, lay off around 50 employees, and allow existing users to keep their accounts active until June.
The move marks a clear strategic shift: double down on the UK and expand further across Europe.
Monzo entered the US in 2020 with a debit card and app, and initially pursued a banking license.
But it withdrew that application within a year, signaling early challenges in navigating the regulatory landscape.
Now, under new CEO Diana Layfield, the company is prioritizing markets where it already has momentum.
Monzo recently secured approval from the European Central Bank and continues to build on its strong UK base of more than 15 million customers.
The decision stands in contrast to peers like Revolut, Wise, and Nubank, all actively expanding into the US market.
Despite intensifying competition at home, Monzo is coming from a position of strength.
The company reported £60.4 million in pre-tax profit for the year ending March 2025, driven in part by growth in lending and its broader product suite.
A retreat from the US, but a sharper focus on winning closer to home.

Might do it just to finally feel like I’ve rested
As someone who has family risk of colon cancer and who is aware of the rising rates in young people, I will hype up colonoscopies to anyone who needs to hear it!
#1 value prop? That “nap that hits like a reset button.”
I’ve had friends call their colonoscopy naps “the best day of my life aside from getting married and having my kids.”
Do it! It’s refreshing and also might save your life.
Last year it took me months just to build chrome extensions and web apps.
Now I can build (some) iOS apps in days.
