Rachel Dolezal is a blue eyed, blond haired white woman who spray tans her skin brown and wears weaves to give herself the appearance of being a black woman.
If ever there were a posterchild for cultural appropriation, Rachel Dolezal is it.
She spent years hijacking opportunities and positions reserved for people of color, claiming their struggle as her own, and convincing the wide world that she had personally experienced the racism she publicly denounced.
Rachel may have had a troubled childhood. Family dynamics may have left her feeling voiceless and marginalized. She may have experienced a degree of injustice, and it is possible that there were a number of parallels between her lived experiences and the experiences of many black people.
But there’s one massive difference.
Rachel can go home and night, remove the weave, wash off the makeup, and shed whatever physical traits are directly linked to the oppression she claims. Her blackness is a costume, and the minute it becomes inconvenient to her in any way, she can put the costume in the closet and navigate life as a white woman.
If she’s tired of fielding racist attitudes, there’s an off switch for her that is unavailable to people of color.
Which makes her a fraud. If you can shed your oppression by looking exactly the way the good Lord created you to look, then you aren’t really being oppressed.
The same is true about men pretending to be women.
