I have been developing techniques for the automated assessment of 🔥events across Australia using NAFI (firenorth.org.au) data. These are the top 10 largest across Australia so far this year. 3 of them > 1 million ha (Terra-Fires, 100x mega fire). The year is not over.

from France, Italy, Slovakia, and the Netherlands, while Portugal is receiving air support from Sweden and Morocco. Meanwhile, Australia is deciding whether or not these north Australian fires even actually exist if we don't 'see' them.

The federal government's thinking ATM seems to be that if we turn off the only service actively monitoring/mapping these fires, then they will no longer exist, and we don't need to worry about them.

This fire south of Katherine (NT) has been burning for two weeks. As of yesterday has burnt 276,931ha. I produced this animation of its spread from Zoom Earth. We usually have fires as massive as this in September. An early start to the wildfire season this year!

Massive fires in the N.T. at the moment. Moving into a severe fire weather season and still no clarity on ALP funding NAFI. Looks like pastoral and other industries will be facing a potentially disastrous fire season blind this year. @TheNTNews @CattleCorp

Patrick Waeber and 1 other liked your post · 2m A quick animation of 2024 fires across Australia's most fire-prone landscapes. 485780 square km burnt. 45.57 million ha. What fire 'means' and its 'impact' is a matter of nuance and context. (LA fires 17 thousand ha).
