I was listening to Respected Smt. Sonia Gandhi ji’s speech from 2004, when she declined to become the Prime Minister of India, and I found myself overwhelmingly proud. There was something deeply moving about that moment. Perhaps because, in politics, we so often witness the struggle to acquire power, but rarely pause to reflect on the grace with which someone can choose not to claim it. Here was a Leader, who had led her party to victory, who had the numbers and the opportunity to occupy the highest office in the country, yet chose a different path. Whatever one’s political beliefs, there is something profoundly human about a moment like this. It reminds us that ambition need not consume conviction, that public life need not be reduced to the pursuit of office, and that a person’s stature cannot always be measured by the position they hold. Power can make someone important. But it is a person’s values, restraint and sense of purpose that give their choices meaning. Perhaps that is why this moment still moves me. Because I want to believe that politics can be about something greater than power that beneath all the noise, the competition and the ambition, there is still room for dignity, sacrifice and the courage to choose differently. Some moments make you admire a leader. Others make you fall in love with the very idea of politics again. For me, this was one of those moments. 🇮🇳 And, Welcome @SoniaGandhi Ji.
