When I was growing up, I was taught that Cajuns lived within KLFY’s doppler radar.
Later, I learned that there are actually two types of Cajuns… Prairie Cajuns and Bayou Cajuns. And that there were these general differences between the two...
Prairie Cajuns:
Tend to choose crawfish over shrimp
Put boiled eggs and potato salad in their gumbo
Food is more based on smoked meats
Mardi Gras is more horseback riding and chicken chasing
Cajun music is more accordion and fiddle
Tend to cook with less celery
More associated with cattle and rice farming
Bayou Cajuns:
Tend to choose shrimp over crawfish
Food is more based on seafood
Mardi Gras is more boat parades
More associated with bayous and sugar cane farming
Thicker Cajun accent

🕯️ HOODOOWEEN TALES: THE THIRD KNOCK
Every night at 3:13, someone knocked on Miss Bernice’s front door.
Two slow knocks.
Never three.
Her grandmother had warned her:
“Baby, two knocks mean they’re asking. Three mean they’re coming in.”
For years, Miss Bernice never answered.
One October night, the knocking came again.
Once.
Twice.
Then silence.
She smiled, thinking whatever it was had finally given up.
Until a third knock came.
Not from the front door.
From inside her bedroom closet.

🕯️ HOODOOWEEN — DAY 26: THRESHOLDS, DOORWAYS & PROTECTION
In Hoodoo, the entrance to a home can hold spiritual significance.
A doorway is more than a place where people enter and leave. It represents the boundary between the outside world and the private space of a household.
For generations, some rootworkers have used doorways, windows, and thresholds in protective workings.
Salt, protective herbs, spiritual washes, powders, and other materials have appeared in different household traditions.
Some practices involved washing the front steps, placing protective materials near entrances, or praying over the home.
The purpose?
To guard the household, discourage unwanted influences, and welcome peace.
But there is another layer to this history.
For enslaved and free people of color living under systems of racial oppression, the home could represent family, survival, privacy, and whatever measure of safety they could establish.
Spiritual protection was sometimes intertwined with the very real need to protect loved ones and preserve a sense of control over one’s surroundings.
Not every household practiced the same way, and traditions varied across communities and generations.
The lesson for Day 26:
A home is more than walls and a roof. It holds the lives, memories, and relationships of those who dwell within it.
🕯️ Guard your doorway. Honor your home. Remember those who kept the light burning before you.
