Little side note from a student assignment I was grading today. Sent students to the library to find something they'd love to read on our last day before this extended time at home. Now he and his mom are reading the same book and we're out of the building for another 3 weeks.

Frank Smith notes that “ho” in each of these words is pronounced differently: hot, hoot, hook, hour, honest, house, hope, honey, and hoist. Good readers can pronounce them accurately, but few ever knew the rules. How did they learn to pronounce these words? Through reading.
