‘For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.’
Why do people turn to religion and what can the church offer that they can't get elsewhere?
The Reverend Fergus Butler-Gallie says that churches that simply preach and tell people to be 'nice' sometimes miss the point, and that a church can offer something that is strange, distant and deep.

Those religious people and lobbyists in full:
Wow: In her interview with us on Sky News just now, Esther Rantzen hit out at “religious people” and “lobbyists” for meaning the assisted dying bill is set to fail

Yesterday I was listening to music and my son came in and I said “with classical music there’s Bach and then there’s everyone else” He said “that’s so Partridge”. I felt a strange mixture of humiliation and paternal pride, which I don’t think there’s even a German word for.

Gas a granny but protect a porker: what an absolutely morally bankrupt ruling class we have.

They are prohibiting the use of CO2 in the slaughter of pigs, but under the assisted dying bill (which the Government have been covertly pushing), CO2 can still be an acceptable approved substance to kill a human being.
🚨 NEW: The Government is set to announce the "biggest animal welfare reforms" in a generation
- Ban puppy farming by reforming dog breeding rules
- Ban electric shock collars on pets pending a consultation
- Ban trail hunting amid concerns it is being used as a smokescreen for illegal fox hunting
- Introduce humane slaughter rules for farmed fish to prevent avoidable pain during killing
- Phase out colony cages for laying hens, which restrict movement and natural behaviours like nesting and perching, and pig farrowing crates, which confine mother pigs and stop them turning around after giving birth
- Ban snare traps that can catch pets and cause suffering for animals
- Reform the use of carbon dioxide to stun pigs after evidence it causes distress and suffering
- Ban shooting hares during the breeding season (roughly from February to September) so young hares are not left without mothers
Powerful moment just now on the harbour as we sang carols opposite Sydney Opera House, when the police helicopters started flying around and we heard about the tragedy round the corner at Bondi Beach. We all prayed together. Lord have mercy.
