People get sovereignty wrong.
The UK was sovereign when it entered the EU, sovereign when it left & sovereign all the way through its membership, being free to leave at any time. We agreed to be governed by laws made in Brussels within the EU’s areas of competence. We were more sovereign (if that is theoretically possible) than Scotland is within the UK (admittedly, some argue Scotland could unilaterally leave).
In any case, the UK is so fractured & badly governed I don’t see the great attraction in making our own laws anyway. Europeans are not monsters or aliens from outer space, just civilised people who want what we want but are in many cases better at getting it. Per capita incomes in the Netherlands, for example, are a third higher than those in the UK & it shows.
Many European visitors to the UK feel as though they have stepped back into the past, so far & so fast have we fallen behind with, among other things, our so-called ‘anglo-saxon model’, which means prosperity for the SE & everywhere else can go hang.
From the sick man of Europe to its laughing stock is but a short journey & a long way back. Sovereignty is for doing beneficial things, not an end in itself.
Sorry for the essay.
Nigel, the two different things we're talking about are independence and sovereignty. Independence is the freedom to act alone; sovereignty is the authority to determine your own destiny. In an interdependent world, that authority is often strengthened, not diminished, by exercising it collectively. The illusion is that acting alone necessarily means being in control.

I've never heard of Harriet Cross, but she is, of course, entitled to her opinion.
She is not entitled to imagine her opinion is more important than the people of Scotland, especially when the Scottish electorate reduced her party to a rump that would fit in a minibus.

The campaign by the English media and Labour party to take control of our largest city in the coming council elections is well under way. Add to this the plans to instal English style Mayors, or London puppets, you can see where we are going.

Bernard Ponsonby ends up laughing at Michael Marra and Joe Fagan after both tie themselves in knots when asked to define the route to a second Indyref. This is genuine car crash stuff from Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Who.

Douglas Alexander admits Labour "misjudged" SNP popularity, blaming the voting system for Labour's worst Holyrood result and claiming 30% vote SNP out of habit. Anything to avoid blaming Anas Sarwar after getting his peerage.

- Secondly a star pupil isn't applying for a psychology course.
- Thirdly Blackley is pushing propaganda with the end goal of all Scottish students having to pay exorbitant student fees.
- Lastly fuck Blackley and the Mail.

It would be remiss of somebody who is not an ignorant American boomer to point out that the NHS is funded overwhelmingly from public money.
We pay for it.
Our taxes fund the hospitals, the staff, the equipment, the medicines, the legal departments and, crucially, the bill when somebody decides to drag an NHS trust through court.
So when Growling threatens an already-struggling NHS institution with an endless procession of lawsuits, she is not threatening some faceless private corporation with shareholders and a Cayman Islands account.
She is threatening a public service paid for by the British people.
Every pound diverted into legal costs, settlements and defending litigation is a pound that ultimately comes out of the same finite public resources paying for nurses, cancer treatment, ambulances, mental-health services and operating theatres.
Of course public bodies must be legally accountable. Nobody gets to wave an NHS lanyard around like a magic immunity card.
But “SUE THEM INTO OBLIVION” has a rather different flavour when “them” is British universal healthcare.
Congratulations, lads.
You have become so consumed by the culture war that you are now cheering on the prospect of extracting money from the NHS and calling it a victory for ordinary women.
Whose money did you think it was?
Growling's?
No, sweetheart.
Ours.

I was just thinking who would be left living in the perfect England that the likes of Lowe & Anderson yearn for. Obviously not any recent migrants, nor Muslims, no Afro-Caribbeans, apart from a few footballers, no EU citizens, no Irish, no travellers, no gays, or trans, & no place for millions of woke liberals like me - the enemy within. Greens are lunatics, they can go, lefty teachers, lawyers, judges, & health professionals, benefit scroungers, King Charles - cos his dad was Greek, single mums, & anybody who doesn't own a petrol car. So, once they have got rid of all those undesirables; sorry, I'd forgotten the disabled, mentally ill, cyclists & bird watchers, they will 'have their country back!' What a place, inhabited only by the likes of Katie Hopkins, Lucy Connolly, John Cleese, Harry Redknapp, Tommy 10 Names, not to mention Bobby J, Nige, Rupert & Lee. To quote Will Young, "think I better leave right now."🤔
‘..they think it’s all over, it is now…’.
And suddenly silence. No more hysteria from the Anglo-Saxon MSM about ‘it’s coming home’, a Knighthood for Sir Harry, Bellingham the greatest footballer since Pele, no more demands from ‘Sir’ Keir ‘Bank Holiday’ Starmer to get behind/
our great nation, silence from the execrable @D_G_Alexander and no screeching, half-witted @BBCScotPolitics journalists (sic) demanding to know if you’ll be supporting England.
Because we really don’t give a 💩.
