NEW: It’s baaaaaack…! Winter season is coming and so has the UKSHA weekly respiratory surveillance report resumed its weekly publication. Headline: respiratory viruses are on their way up, led by rhinovirus (common cold) followed by COVID-19. gov.uk/government/statistics…

And just over 3.5 years later, I submitted my PhD thesis yesterday! 🐕🦠
Super excited to announce I'll be starting my PhD at the University of Glasgow in April, looking at metapopulations & the disease dynamics of rabies! 😁🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🐕

Had an amazing time at the UofG computational biology conference last week, and was super pleased to receive the best presentation award! Thanks to the organisers for putting on a great event 💻🌿
Good morning! We’re busy setting up for a fantastic 2 days of computational biology fun. It was so nice of the folks at @UofGARC to set up a wee countdown for us, they must be just as excited for us to kick off us we are! #cbc24

Do I know any mustelid people on here who can help me figure out what this is? I can’t decide between otter and mink- seems too dark to be an otter but not pointy enough for mink? inaturalist.org/observations…

If you work on pandemics, global health security, disease ecology, or conservation, I hope you'll read and share our new preprint. 👇 (Or, just take this statistic: For every hour you travel from a clinic, the lifetime odds of detecting an outbreak goes down by one third.)
New @viralemergence study in preprint! How consistent are the impacts of social and environmental drivers on the outbreak geography of emerging infectious diseases? We harmonised surveillance and geospatial data for 32 diseases to ask this question. medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

New reasearch supports that leprosy passed between humans and red squirrels in medieval England, with fur trade and pet keeping playing an important role in the spread of the disease. This is the first time that an animal host of leprosy is found in the archaeological record.

It seems like a good opportunity to release {phyloshapeR}, a new R package 📦I developed to create the cover! It is meant to be used to plot phylogenies using map contours (or any other figures) Check how to use it here: github.com/iramosgutierrez/p…

Does anyone happen to know where the idea that opossums can't get rabies bc of their low body temperature actually came from? I see it absolutely everywhere online but haven't found an obvious source
