3/10 With a number of collaborators, led by my PhD student @MogicianTony from UC Berkeley, we have also been thinking deeply about this question. In our recent paper, "Towards Autonomous Software Development," we argue that software engineering is entering a structural transition, not simply another improvement in coding productivity. In the paper, we: • Introduce a taxonomy with three levels of autonomy for software development • Identify six structural shifts that reshape how software is built • Present ten predictions for the future of software engineering • Outline a research roadmap toward trustworthy autonomous software development

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” Coding agents are already remarkably capable. Yet we find that they are still stuck at the lowest level on the SDLC automation taxonomy, with many As AI advances, we expect a series of disruptive shifts in how software is specified, built, verified, deployed, and governed. The transition will not simply make coding faster; it will fundamentally reshape software engineering. Very grateful for all the thoughtful collaborators on sharing the insights and understandings of what the future may hold! Our new position just dropped. Given the rise of cybersecurity abilities of @AnthropicAI and @OpenAI, we argue that making AI safer may not be the way to make the world safer. We believe that the future is about training offensive AI agents to defend against cyber attacks.

Time flies!! It has been 5 years since we released and demonstrated AFLNet at ICST 2020. What a great journey! We share some reflections and an ablation study of our tool in this recently accepted TSE paper. We also introduce the “dark-grey-mode” of AFLNet. Pls check it out!
