There are a dozen or so #caleg public policy choices that may have made sense in isolation, but don't make sense in the aggregate that cause CA electricity prices to be sky high.
Fixing it would make a meaningful difference for millions of people.
The Board of Equalization was eliminated in purpose when the power was stripped from the office.
What remains is a zombie entity where a few bureacrats get to spike their pensions and a handful of elected officials get do nothing jobs.
I am an "all of the above" housing guy at this point. But it needs to be said:
No one builds "affordable cars". Used cars are just new cars that got old. Same goes for housing.
We don't have affordable housing today, because we didn't build market rate housing yesterday.
We’re working to solve California’s housing crisis.
It was a pleasure to join Assemblymember @BuffyWicks, labor, local elected officials, and community members who are turning this site in El Cerrito into housing: public land next to a BART station, a 100% affordable building, homes built in a factory, and union labor on the job. It’s the first phase of a plan to turn BART parking lots into 743 homes.
This is what building housing the right way looks like. Every Californian deserves a home they can afford, close to where they work.
Just bringing this up because it is the perfect response to nice, kind, friendly but not smart conservatives.
I am hoping by bringing it up outside of a particular controversy, it might get a fresh read.
Megan, sorry for the delayed response. Just bothered to look. I think this response of yours is embarrassingly insipid. Sorry.
First, as many have noted, you seem to know nothing about Jefferson’s writings on this, or Washington’s Letter to the Hebrew Congregation in Newport, or the debates around the establishment clause, the meaning of the Declaration, not to mention the role of deism and similar ideas.
You also seem to think “they were 99% Christian” is some kind of novel insight and silver bullet argument. Disagreements between Christian denominations were quite meaningful to the Founders at the time, and to American culture generally. There were these people called “the Puritans” who, in no small part because these disagreements, fled England for America. It’s true that states could have established churches, but that practice evaporated very early in the new republic, in part because of this preference for theological diversity (if you prefer “theological pluralism” that’s fine with me). Indeed Madison and others argued that theological competition was actually good.
But the really annoying thing about your response is that you are buying into the idea that the low brow rank bigotry that started this conversation can be salvaged with your shallow historical and theological musings. You are coming to the rescue of a mob of bigots, and you’re carrying a nerf bat into the fight.
Want a better life? Here is one sentence that can change everything*:
Working on this and will report back.
*Requires actually working on it and reporting back
Man's search for meaning continues.
And I promise you, the political hills y'all are picking are the wrong ones to die on.
One way to talk to #caleg is via their vendors.
The pollster, treasurer, fundraiser, and consultants all have networks.
Politics is a team sport can be a cliche. It can also be a strategic lever, that most people are not even thinking about.
Chocolate is an essential ingredient in public policy.
Members talking to each other helps create some durable thinking that they can apply to multiple bills.
They don't get paid extra for working harder.
Housing costs don't have a one-line fix. In January, @AsmAnamarie led a Problem Solvers Caucus deep dive on housing. Deep dives let the caucus dig into a complex issue over hours or days, with a broad mix of speakers, and look for common ground. #caleg
I don't celebrate the death of the wicked.
One of my favorite songs is about Amazing Grace "that saved a wretch like me". I am much closer to the vilest offender than the righteousness of the Christian saviour.
I celebrate justice with deep humility.
People who got rich in one area but think they understand politics make the worst political consultants.
Followed closely by academics.
Would be Governors Checchi, Whitman, and Steyer still vehemently disagree, which I take as proof I'm right.
Academics make the worst political consultants.

I would consider it a mercy from God if I could live as faithfully as this guy is dying.
About the best thing I can say about a person is he makes me want to be a better man.
If you are the praying type, spare a few words for Me. Sasse and his family.
Thx for the prayers — Turns out cutting out chunks of yer liver is no joke, man.
Good news, bad news, and next steps…
Good: big liver surgery last week successfully cleared out a bunch o cancer. (Pretty darn great — considering 9 mons ago, when told I had 3-4 months to live, surgery wasn't even an option.)
Bad: Tests on the tumors show they were more advanced than we thought — meaning always-mutating tumors have developed some resistance tricks to our former treatment protocol.
Bummer but that's life, and was eventually expected.
Next:
We're gunna change up treatment to carpet-bomb-chemo as much of the rest of the cancer as we can for a bit.
Send chemo tips -- do NOT send more Nickelback promotional materials (am painfully aware they’ll be performing at the Hondo Rodeo Fest in Febr).
Grateful to God for this extra time — both time w/ fam and time to fight. Can't say enough good things about…

I loved this powerhouse panel of political reporters.
One key insight?
Becerra pre-Swalwell had a very different tone.
Worth some of my time to notice the differences.
Tyranny of the urgent is killing your effort.
Breathe. What does a great plan look like?
Don't let the urgent become the engine of your day

This is a fascinating report a SAT alternative.
"the SB assessment, like other standardized tests, reflects and reproduces
inequalities and opportunity gaps"
Being poor sucks and no test is going to tell you what that student should have otherwise achieved.
Test any way.
It was considered, and the recommendation was to not use it. Reasons here: regents.universityofcaliforn…

This taco spot on Calle Olvera in LA is legit.
I'm told this street used to be packed with tourists and it is now largely vacant.
The taco stand had a line but the rest of the street was mostly shut.

Friends on here had problems with water agencies.
I asked several people why.
Paired water General Managers with academic leadership experts and developed a leadership training program for mid-level managers.
