Dan Rather wasn’t familiar with Bari Weiss before she took over as editor-in-chief of CBS News.
“You judge a person by what they do, and what she’s done is she’s quickly turned CBS News in the direction of being a version of Fox News, perhaps a little more palatable. But I didn’t know her beforehand, and I don’t know her now. Frankly, we didn’t hear much about her until she was rewarded with many millions of dollars for her company [‘The Free Press’], and then paid to come in and start destroying CBS News.”

From @ScienceMagazine: Hamid Khazaei explains that he returned to academia because he missed the interactions with students.
That's a major reason I came back, too. I missed the students more than anything else. I'm glad to be back teaching.

New motto for total boomer communism:

"Netflix has become to entertainment what White Castle is to dining. It fills the gap (in your time instead of your belly) with barely acceptable fare. Its shows and movies come and go so quickly, it’s hard to form a mental image of most of them. . . . Netflix has become a slop factory, but it’s being out-slopped by the Empire of Slop: YouTube."
From @WSJFreeEx via @WSJOpinion: Netflix is reeling in profits, but it’s also plain reeling, writes @rkylesmith on.wsj.com/48coYVo
The cherry-picking is bad enough, but the smug, condescending attitude and grating accent are also reasons to never watch John Oliver.
HBO's @LastWeekTonight has a long track record of citing social science findings without the appropriate context, massaging them to support whatever point @iamjohnoliver is trying to make.

Then he cherry-picked his own.

If high taxes and a big welfare state worked, France would be a utopia. The citizens would be dancing on the streets… instead they are the civil unrest capital of Europe.
On the flip side, Switzerland with its low tax, small state is peaceful, calm, affluent and secure.
Good Intentions don’t matter. Good outcomes do.

There is a very real motivation to spin an interesting historical period about an impactful scientific discovery as a simple case of sexism and a woman who got robbed. It's not.
Great mini-read on this from expert historian Matthew Cobb.

The Grumpy Economist says what needs to be said about the way forward (link in next post):
"In the old days, people had children in part to support them when they got old, sick, or unlucky. In a welfare state, other people’s children take care of you when you get old or sick or unlucky."
"Margaret Thatcher said socialism ends when you run out of other people’s money. Here we are. The welfare state ends when you run out of other people’s children. Here we are."

"However much a government spends, someone will always demand more. Someone will always say that some public service is 'scandalously underfunded,' and denounce 'crushing austerity.'"
France’s protesters are rioting against austerity that doesn’t exist. Macron might as well give them the real thing, writes @K_Niemietz.

"Book of Mormon teachings contradict the erroneous assertion that the grace of God saves only a chosen few."
The Book of Mormon is a great witness that the Lord loves all people and reaches out to all, everywhere.
The Book of Mormon adds to our knowledge of how our Savior’s earthly ministry reached out to all of His scattered flock.
Book of Mormon teachings contradict the erroneous assertion that the grace of God saves only a chosen few.
The Book of Mormon teaches that our Savior "inviteth ... all to come unto him" (2 Nephi 26:33). His grace is for all.
Similarly, the Book of Mormon tells us that the children of God in “every nation” have His promise that He “manifesteth himself unto all those who believe in him, by the power of the Holy Ghost” (2 Nephi 26:13).
These promises from the Book of Mormon are true.
I call upon all to act on these truths and to share them with others, that we may all draw closer to Jesus Christ, our Savior.
