The root of all the debt / spending dysfunction in the Euro zone is the ECB, which has a track record of capping yields of high-debt countries when they run into trouble like for Italy and Spain in 2022. This only ends when creditor countries like Germany stop the ECB...

French protestors want higher public spending, wages, subsidies and pensions. Meanwhile France has gov’t spending of 57% of GDP (among highest of Western countries), deficits of 5% of GDP, 10 year bond rate >5%, and a currency they don’t control. I don’t understand how this ends.

“For the first time since the founding of the state. In all the mosques in Israel, the elections [are mentioned] in the Friday prayer sermon.
The imam: I must call on you to vote. I am not a political person. It is a duty to vote. It is a duty to stop the violence and murder and the destruction of our homes. This week they demolished a mosque in the south and fined a mourning hut because they played the Quran. Vote and stop this.”

Let me offer a few hints: an Eisenkot coalition will not have to cater to racists, ultranationalists or self-serving political blackmailers. It will not need a war with Iran to save its political life. It will include people who care about human life - of Arabs as well as Jews. So yes, we are likely to see some subtle changes.

Breaking: Final Israeli pre-election polls in three major TV channels:
• Netanyahu coalition parties win 50 out of 120 Knesset seats.
• The Bloc for Change gets 52-56 seats.
• Eisenkot favored over Netanyahu as national leader by 6-10% gap.
• The Arab parties (including Abbas’s party Raam with Jewish former police officer and MK Segalovitz) are projected to score about 16 seats.
• Small non-bloc parties may or may not get the threshold of 4 seats.
==> My take:
• Eisenkot and his partners will need the Arab parties to back them; hopefully as full coalition members rather than supportive outsiders.
• The predicted 50 Netanyahu bloc seats are not what I would have liked in the aftermath of 7 October, but not all of its voters are bibists. The ultra Orthodox parties have their separate agenda. Eisenkot’s party scores better than Likud.
• The polls can be very wrong, in either direction. And so much can still happen before and during 27 October.
• The great election odyssey I mentioned in an earlier tweet, 70K Israelis flocking from abroad to vote, is of course not included in the polls.
• For liberal democracy and some horizon for peace, this is probably the last stand. Fingers crossed.

The speed limits on Starlink and Starshield are still there. The speed has not been restored. And the delivery of interceptors to protect us against Russian ballistic missiles is still delayed. We’re waiting for interceptors that were already agreed on. But they are still not coming. This is a real problem, because the Russians attack us almost every single day.
All of this is happening while we continue our quite successful operations on the front. We keep defending positions. Things have become harder – partly because of the Starlink and Starshield policies and speed limits. But our frontline is still holding and I am proud of how strong our people are.

In case you thought this was ever about NATO or the Nazis.
Russian President Vladimir Putin cited genetics to declare that Russians and Ukrainians are “one people” and reiterated his claim to Ukrainian territory, saying: “I think that it is not their territory but the historical territory of Russia.” wapo.st/48aZaZF

It's hilarious how Western Russia apologists keep on insisting this is all about NATO and then Putin just goes out and says "no actually we're imperialist" on a regular basis.
Putin on Ukraine:
The lands lost by Kyiv are not "their territory"; they are historically Russian lands.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Kyiv predates Moscow by centuries, and southern/eastern Ukraine was ruled by the Cossack Hetmanate and Crimean Khanate long before 18th-century Russian Imperial annexation. In 1991, every Ukrainian region voted overwhelmingly for independence, recognized by Russia 1994.

Three waves of ballistic missiles have been launched at Kyiv by Russian “humanitarians” since yesterday evening. They used 21 missiles. Unfortunately, numerous sites across the city have been hit and damaged: ordinary residential buildings, energy facilities, infrastructure at one of the railway stations and the metro, shopping malls, and businesses. Even a monastery is among the damaged sites. Our emergency services are working at all the affected locations. Twelve of our regions came under Russian attack overnight. In Kyiv and across the regions, 34 people were injured, including five children. As of now, two people have been confirmed killed. My condolences to their families and loved ones.
Almost immediately after another round of talks, Russia launched a pointed attack. This means there has been no real change in its attitude toward everything that is happening. It is important to keep trying to find the right solutions to end this war. But when Russia responds to negotiations with ballistic missiles, real pressure on Russia is needed to bring about different steps – steps toward ending the killing. Stronger air defenses and the rapid delivery of missiles, the ability to destroy ballistic missile launchers, sanctions over the war – all of this must be in place. I am grateful to everyone who sees the situation for what it is and acknowledges the reality. The aggressor deserves to be treated accordingly. Ukraine deserves support. People's lives deserve protection. Thank you to everyone who stands with Ukraine!

We suspected this was the reason Ukraine’s access to Starshield was restricted. But to see it from senior officials in this reporting is still utterly unconscionable.
Let’s be absolutely clear about what this means. The Trump Administration deliberately restricted technology Ukraine relies on to intercept Russian drones and ballistic missiles. It made it harder for Ukraine to defend itself and easier for Russia to carry out its deadly attacks against Ukrainian civilians.
They knew exactly what was at stake. They knew that more Russian drones and missiles would get through, allowing Russia to kill even more Ukrainians. And yet they went ahead anyway.
This is a deliberate weaking of Ukraine’s defenses that only Russia will benefit from. It is a betrayal of our ally that this Administration cannot wash its hands of.
The American people deserve to know who made this decision, why they made it, and how they can possibly justify putting more innocent Ukrainian lives in the crosshairs of Putin’s war machine.

Greta is really something. Though busy being a full-time antisemite, she manages to squeeze into her schedule time to raise money to support the French rioters, who, she says, are saving French society. Would love to know who controls that money and where it goes.
What’s interesting here isn’t that Greta is involved in the French riots/“student protests.” Why would she miss the opportunity? What’s more interesting is how casually she says things like “donate here,” revealing what seems to be a much wider network of professional activists, fundraising channels, and organizations ready to mobilize whenever an opportunity presents itself.

The opposite is true: Macron identified France’s structural problems years ago.
He proposed pension reforms in 2019 and 2023. Both faced massive protests. The 2023 reform was later suspended.
Now those who blocked reforms are back on the streets, protesting the consequences.
Macron will go down in history as one of France’s worst presidents. He has pushed a once-great nation to the brink of economic, demographic, and social ruin.
Had he spent his nine years in power focusing less on “Palestine” and more on Putin and the putains de salauds threatening France from within, his country would be far better off.
