The thing I can't accept about hustle culture... The thing I can't accept about working 15 hours a day... The thing I can't accept about being so obsessed with my work that I can't switch off... Is that it takes away from my true role. Being a Dad and a Husband. Everything else is background noise. I've been there, wanting to meet that definition of success which means working 15 hours a day, people telling you that's what you need to do for years, whilst never switching off, to eventually find some remnant of success to only find there is no peace there, only more hard work to keep what you have built. Success to me isn't monetary or status, it's bringing up my 3 boys to be good decent Men in a world that desperately needs more of them. To have 3 boys that choose to be around me, not out of a sense of family duty. To make sure I am around to see my wife's beautiful smile in the small moments as we grow old. I have spent a lot of time in my career over the years working out how to have success in my work whilst also having success in my life and it's not easy. I am giving away for completely free, 2 x 3 month mentorships to anyone who wants to get better at this. My work with Crying On the Sofa drives me to help others where I can. Just either comment or DM me. You don't need to follow or share or anything, just let me know you're interested somehow. No catch, no upsell, nothing. Just a free mentorship. If you want it. #worklifebalance #dadlife #leadership #engineeringmanager #softwareengineering #tech #mentalhealth #careeradvice

Crying On the Sofa was a hit and I had messages since saying the talks and being there made a big difference to them and made them smile for the first time in a while. The version of me, sitting on the sofa, trying to dry my tears before my wife walked back in room would have smiled at that. I'm proud of me for this one. Remember, if you let tomorrow be a better day, imagine how great next week can be. Lets be real... most software engineers dont know about this
Do vibe coders know about: deadlocks, memory leaks, N+1 queries, distributed locks, eventual consistency, failover, load balancing, and rollback strategies? Or do they just keep prompting until localhost turns green?

Tomorrow is Crying On the Sofa's first event aimed at raising awareness for mental health. Sheffield, Sept 24th at 6:30pm at Pendo.io offices. Free, pizza included. I was sat on the sofa cuddling my baby son, crying my eyes out, struggling to see a way out, hoping the tears would dry before my wife walked back in the room. Depression was a dark place for me, somewhere I had never experienced before, and it drove me to think in ways that I believed I could never escape from. So many people have their own stories and/or know people whom mental health has affected. It's a serious f'in issue and I refuse to sit down and let the world go by without trying to do something about it. If you let tomorrow be a better day, imagine how great next week can be. Great speakers lined up: - Georgina Shute: 'Why Billion-pound Systems are Built by People who Can't Finish Their to-do lists' - Michael Banner: 'The Version of Me You See: Success, Self-doubt and Struggling Behind the Screen' - Gemma Brown Aaron Hopper: trailer for new short film 'SCENES I NEVER SHOT', Q&A and talk We got press coverage - check out ShefNews website. Spaces still available, sign up at cryingonthesofa dot org. Link in comments. Please share to get this event in front of as many people as possible. #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #depression #mentalwellness #endthestigma #itsokaytonotbeokay #sheffield #techcommunity #communityevent

Being a software engineer in your first management role is one of the toughest points in your career. What made you good at being a software engineer will not make you a good manager. - You are learning by trial and error - You are avoiding those difficult conversations: 'let's give it another week to see if it improves' - Your team are bearing the brunt of your learning on the job 82% of new engineering managers aren't trained. And it's not just you who pays the price. - The engineer who lost that promotion because you didn't know how to build a promotion case - The engineer who left because you didn't articulate the vision clearly - The engineer who was costing the team because you kept finding excuses not to have that hard conversation This is exactly why I built EM Accelerator It's a 90-day program, with free mentorship included, taught by experts at Google, Meta, n8n, Oracle, Salesforce and more, with the goal of enabling you to know what to do when the people stuff gets hard. Stop letting your team bear the brunt of you choosing to learn on the job. We are so confident that there's a 7-day free trial and a 7-day full money-back guarantee. DM me 'manager', or there's a link under my name or in my bio. #engineeringmanager #softwareengineering #engineering #leadership #techlead #management #developer #coding #careeradvice #tech

No one cares about your career... No one cares about you when managing their own career... The truth? If the worst happened... you would be replaced. Only you care about your career... People who might seem to care in the short term want something from you, whether that's to stay longer, quit sooner, join a role etc. Be selfish when making career decisions. Do what is best for you and your family. F everything else. Whatever makes you happy... do that. #CareerAdvice #SoftwareEngineering #EngineeringManager #Tech #Developer #CareerGrowth #SWE #TechCareers #ProfessionalDevelopment #WorkLifeBalance

There is one trait that separates the great Engineering Managers from the average ones. It's knowing when your humanity comes before being a manager. Noticed someone is more distant, they used to push back and now they don't? Your first act absolutely cannot be your manager hat. It must be as a human. Talk to them, and listen to understand not respond. Do they just need some leeway for a bit? Do they need some extra support? You never know what battle someone else might be fighting. Do not be yet another battle they need to fight. Be human first. Always. #EngineeringManager #TechLeadership #PeopleFirst #Leadership #Engineering #SoftwareEngineering #EM #TechTwitter #CodingLife #DevCommunity
