During conference championship week, Alabama earned a marquee win over No. 1 Georgia. But Texas only took down No. 18 Oklahoma State. Florida State beat a higher ranked No. 14 Louisville team.

On pure resume, Texas looked like it should have been out. It had the worst loss of the group (No. 12 OU). The Longhorns had some good wins, but so did the other two. Texas didn't seem to have any h2h case against FSU. They were lower the week before and beat a worse team.

A. The most obvious is to drop Alabama out with a loss. In this scenario, Miami and ND go in together. B. Bama drops one spot with a loss, between ND and Miami, keeping the Hurricanes out of reach from the Irish. C. BYU doesn't drop at all, staying ahead of Miami.

There is a possibility for A, but it depends on the Crimson Tide enduring a bad 2nd half. Option C would be more challenging to justify considering how poorly BYU played. Option B could work. Bama, like BYU, drops, just not enough to be out.

Let's start off with the SEC Title Game. There have been four of these since 2012. A. Georgia scored first in 2012 before a 32-28 loss. B. In 2018, the Dawgs struck first and had MULTIPLE 14-point leads. C. 2021 UGA led 10-0 before 41-24 defeat. D. 2023 Georgia led 7-0, lost.

Neither Tulane nor North Texas is perfect record-wise this season. But there have been undefeated group of five teams who have barely made a dent in the CFP Top 25. A. In 2023, Liberty went 13-0 and finished 23rd. B. 2016 Western Michigan (13-0) finished at 15th.

Alabama's best win was against No. 17 LSU, while the Buckeyes had two top ten victories. OSU had endured a much tougher schedule, yet the committee and analysts later cited the bad loss to Iowa as too much to overlook...

I think we see a similar debate popping up here. BYU's resume isn't even that bad. It's actually quite similar to Alabama's in 2017. Two top twenty wins (No. 15 Utah, No. 18 Arizona) and a loss to a top five team in the country. Both SOS's are close as well...

Replying to @RyanRandone @SMUFB
In 2022, Ohio State sat at 5th entering conference title week while USC sat at 4th. Both teams entered at 11-1, but the Trojans lost in the Pac-12 championship game to Utah and later lost their spot to an idle Buckeyes team. This precedent, however, was first set in 2017...

Interestingly enough, it was Alabama who first benefited from this possibility. In 2017, the Crimson Tide sat outside the top four after a loss to rival Auburn on the final week of the season. The Crimson Tide only made the field after a defeat from previously 12-0 Wisconsin.
