Peak Oxford Performance.
There was a chap at Oxford who came up in the 80s to research the 4 year tenure of a Yorkshire bishop. He spent 40 years on it, draining an inheritance left on condition it was spent on his education. Daily Mass (sometimes several times a day), lobster every day at Brown's next to the Oratory (hence the gout), magnificent dinner parties for miscreants, oddballs and grad students, and generous to charity. His fingers were so fat that his signet rings appeared stuck to them. Having spent every last penny, he was evicted from his apartment and became a monk some 3 years ago. No wife, no kids, and I don't think the DPhil ever got finished. Top 5 most eccentric human beings Iโ€™ve met in my life. Bless him.

"My interest lies in Lincoln in the Bardo as a representative work of contemporary literary culture. And so, here are the ground rules I think Saunders accommodated in writing it, rules he bent but never broke"

Last year I wrote a novel that imagines 150 years into the future. A small remnant has fled Earth to Mars to escape a coming catastrophe After 60 years away, they send back two men, a Muslim scientist and Catholic monk, to find out just what happened.

The Spanish Prisoner is a peak David Mamet film showing that: โ€ข the truth of being deceived can also deceive; โ€ข Steve Martin can play the heavy and still dominate; โ€ข assimilation into the American story is Providential; โ€ข and our country has too few St. Patrick's Day movies.

Pascal would not be surprised by the nihilism, vengefulness, and love of destruction on display in Paris this week. His apologetic reveals the restless self-love in every ideological project and vindicates the Christian promise of uniting justice and force.

So Michigan loses the Upper Peninsula, but Ohio keeps Toledo? We fought a war over that port city. The governor called for militias. Towns formed regiments. They fired six shots. Then they struck a deal, and the UP was ours...forever! We'll keep the Mudhens too!

It's his greatest line, contrasting a human idea versus a divine idea, and like many jewels, it's buried in the appendix.
"Men think they prove their greatness by simplifying the means. God's object is simple but His means infinitely various." Alexis de Tocqueville

OKโ€”gonna see how many of these Iโ€™ve done. Betting itโ€™s a perfect score of all seven! (For what itโ€™s worth, @thelampmagazine is routinely the best.)

You Can See Everything is pure astral America. At one scene, the husband is talking to an AI Holmes while lizards crawl around his Texan kitchen. Among the Baudrillardian elements are: โ€ข the repeated audio-visual flashback with varying interpretations a la Blowup, Conversation, or Blowout; โ€ข Hitchcock trope of a guy secretly longing for a girl and settling for her double; โ€ข more self-referential layers than a Borges story; โ€ข a breaking of genre and form for documentaries akin to F for Fake or Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take One, as the guide breaks rules that didn't even exist; โ€ข plus Fielder's own deadpan, flare for contrived awkward situations amid endless curve balls.

But Marley, you were always a good man of business. Business, Scrooge? Mankind was my business. The common welfare was my business. Charity, benevolence, forbearance, mercy were all my business. My trade was but a drop in the comprehensive ocean of my business.
It is required of every man that the spirit within him should walk abroad among his fellowmen, and travel far and wide; and if that spirit goes not forth in life, it is condemned to do so after death. It is doomed to wander through the worldโ€”oh, woe is me!โ€”and witness what it cannot share, but might have shared on earth and turned to happiness! At this time of the rolling year I suffer most. Why did I walk through crowds of fellow-beings with my eyes turned down, and never raise them to that blessed Star which led the Wise Men to a poor abode! Were there no poor homes to which its light would have conducted me!
