Most financial institutions understand the DPDP Act theoretically. Very few can yet visualize DPDP in full execution and the operational reality of it. That was the thread through our closed-door roundtable in Mumbai on Monday, on what the Act means for India’s banks and financial institutions. On 13 May 2027, seven months from now, every substantive obligation applies on the same day. 𝗔𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲: Sankarson Banerjee, former CIO, RBL Bank; former CTO, NSE Rajesh Hemrajani, CISO, Paytm; former CISO, IDFC First Bank, Nomura and RBS @probirpaymate, tech entrepreneur; Independent Director, Nazara Sunil Kumar Gupta, Chairman, SARC CA Rajendra Bagade and Chandra Shekhar Akula, Senior Partners, SARC 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱: 1. The law is understood. The data isn’t. Personal data sits well beyond core banking, in LOS, CRM, call recordings, exports, shared drives, laptops and partner systems. You can’t honour rights over data you haven’t found. 2. Not everything runs on consent. KYC and AML rest on legal obligation. Marketing needs consent. One checkbox for both fails both. 3. Retention vs erasure. PMLA and KYC rules require records to be kept for years. DPDP requires erasure once the purpose ends. The answer is a retention schedule by record class that reconciles both, and tells the customer what was kept and why. 4. Processors or not If data is shared with a third party only in encrypted form, is that party a Data Processor? 5. Withdrawal is where consent breaks. Capturing a choice is easy. Proving the withdrawal reached every system and partner is not. 6. One incident, several clocks. CERT-In within six hours, RBI reporting, and DPDP notice to the Board and affected customers. That needs one rehearsed playbook with named decision-makers. The shared conclusion: DPDP is an operating function, not a project with an end date. The Data Protection Board is yet to be staffed, but the deadline doesn’t depend on it. We closed with a demonstration of how DataSurity runs all of this on one platform: data discovery, consent, rights, data mapping and assessment. It is built in India for Indian law, backed by SARC’s practice and engineers who have built data-heavy consumer applications at scale.
