We plan on fully supporting the Gamecock Club Baseball team! Dear Mayor Rickenman and the Columbia City Council, Like many people with ties to the old Capital City Stadium, mine began as a student at USC. From the first time I stepped on campus, I was always curious about the rundown ballpark on Assembly, a park filled with history and potential. Fast forward a few years later, when I found myself managing the USC Club Baseball team. I quickly learned about the lacking availability of public field space in Richland County and the surrounding areas. Our options were limited to expensive private schools, where we were nickled and dimed for every minute we spent, or public fields, which had varying availability, sub-par quality, and required driving all over the midlands. Ironically, at the time, I had inquired about Capital City Stadium's availability despite its recent decay. Every day on the way to practice, we'd pass by the old ball park, imagining how amazing it would be to play on that historic field. Digging through the history of our club, I also discovered that we had onced played there. In the photos, not only do we see a glimpse of the past, but also a snapshot of the future. A ballpark that encapsulates Columbia's history, rejuvenates the Olympia neighborhood, and embodies the hope and pride that we have in our city's future. I know the restoration of this park would take time and resources. I also know that there are dozens, if not hundreds, of volunteers in the USC Club Baseball community that would answer the call to build themselves a home and to preserve this city's athletic jewel for generations to come. #SaveCapitalCityStadium Thank You, Joe Tartaglia USC '22
