reminder this week. its not who wins the benchmarks that wins SI. its who has the most Enterprise clients, who has the most compute infrastructure, & who has the most paying userbase. whoever nails all 3 wins. currently, no company wins all 3.

Reality Check: Top SI/AI models scored only 12% in tests across 206 tasks, in 11 fields. Scores ZERO in finance and legal. As great as SI models are, there is still plenty of headroom for improvement. newsletter.semianalysis.com/…

Game developers are still worth getting paid. It still makes sense to pay for games.

A tasteful move would have been to make a heartfelt post this morning telling all GrokBot fans about to cost issues & the plan to raise price/reduce usage. Supporters would have respected & supported this. Instead, they felt betrayed like the rug had been pulled under them.

A better way use YouTube by big brain Karpathy.
Weekend hack: HackerTube. I was annoyed with YouTube's recommendations so I had Claude filter down 43M comments over 20 years of HN to 6,454 videos that keep being recommended. *Significantly* better viewing experience, ~2 hours with Opus 5.5: hackertube.org/ - Excellent recs without any logins (state is kept in local browser session) - Thumbnail is a representative frame from middle of the video instead of the super duper A/B test hyper-optimized user uploads - Underlying data from the comment analysis as one zip file, point your Claude at it and ask for your own version - HackerTube Longs ✊ A bit more on the process: I use Claude Code (desktop app for Mac), Opus 5.5 on Medium effort as my default. I only talk to Claude and have it do everything, the only "manual work" I helped with in tandem was in the browser (reminiscent of MenuGen): 1) I had to create some kind of API key from Google Cloud UI to query YouTube for video metadata, 2) I booted up a VPS box for serving and 3) I bought the domain name. Once the box was up I gave Claude the IP and told it update, secure, harden, deploy and optimize the code, and it did the whole thing. Many awesome projects that would have normally taken weeks/months even can now be few-shotted for breakfast. What else are we not thinking of.

We'll actually support & respect this if it was sent this morning: Elon: "Guys, we can't. We tried. GrokBot is too expensive to run. We're going to have to raise prices or reduce usage. To sweeten the deal, we'll give you____but effective starting tomorrow, we'll reduce usage or raise prices." But many had a bad taste in the mouth. It made dots and muse a viable option not because they are better, but because they feel the rug has been pulled under them.

Ladies and gentlemen, the supposed best AI in the world.
Gemini Argon sees its own name as triggering. Oh boy… we are off to a good start 😅

Thank you for this insightful and thought-provoking critique of Anthropic's thought-policing. Their lawyers (*rolls eyes*) would argue that there is no policing of thought. But the output of their LLM is proprietary & they can do to it whatever they want.
Text messages with a machine, in and of themselves, are not criminal, immoral, or dangerous, for there is no victim, whatever the content. It is the very same thing as with thoughts—regardless of the content, no thought can be said to create a victim. • If someone steals info and feeds it into an LLM, it was the theft itself which created the victim, not the subsequent text message. • If someone uses the output of an LLM to hack a system, it is that subsequent hack which creates the victim, not the text message preceding it. • If someone threatens harm to themselves or others through messages into a machine, here still the messages themselves cannot be said to have created any victim. Imagining otherwise inappropriately reorients blame from its rightful place: the action of harm actually done by a perpetrator. Thinking harm =/= harm. As humans integrate AI as an extension of their mind, policing at the message layer means to increasingly police thought itself. Which company, which committee, do you trust to police your thoughts? Or do you simply want the thoughts of others policed, and not your own?

OpenAI may have lost this battle as they do not have a competent Enterprise Sales leadership. By Feb, Anthropic was already in Corporate America doing deals. OpenAI was asleep. It was only 2 mo. ago that they got serious & hired 2 proper Enterprise Sales leaders. One may not be suited for the job. The other is quite competent. (Mark Fleming.) Jaime is stellar but was hired only a few weeks ago. lol Even their CRO was just hired 3 months ago. There is a corporate war going on between frontiers and OpenAI is playing the amateur hour game. Winning Enterprise deals takes momentum. Anthropic's IPO is days away. Promising Enterprise deals for OpenAI won't close for another few months. It is too late. It is time to concede the "Enterprise AI King" to Anthropic. The best OpenAI can hope for now is a solid and respectable 2nd place. But they might lose that one too. @sama
It feels like Anthropic has completely and utterly won the enterprise war. Every single big company we speak to is using Claude internally. And the same is true on the software engineering side. Vibes are so heavily Anthropic since Opus 5.5. Where is OpenAI?

Decels & doomers are loud in America. While they protest data centers or rage against SI, there is a reason to be optimistic. The rest of the world is embracing science & SI progress. The future is bright for those who choose to build w/ superintelligence, unlike those who wish to tear it apart.

This is what happens when a company loses a genius captain.
Tim Cook saved $60 billion by refusing to meet Elon Musk in 2017, only to burn $10 billion on a ghost car project and lose the entire next industrial cycle. The story of Tim Cook refusing to even sit down with Elon Musk during Tesla’s 2017 "production hell" is easily one of the costliest non-meetings in corporate history. Back then, Tesla was weeks away from total bankruptcy, with Elon sleeping on the factory floor. Musk offered to sell Tesla for around $60B—a fraction of its eventual trillion-dollar peak. Cook didn't even grant him a coffee. Why? Because Apple fell into the ultimate supply-chain hubris. They thought building a car was just like building an iPhone: hire 5,000 engineers, throw $10 billion at it, and leverage your cash reserves. But manufacturing physical vehicles is a brutal biological monster compared to consumer electronics. Cars have 10,000+ safety-critical parts, harsh physical tolerances, and micro-margin logistics. Worse, Apple’s internal leadership split into ideological factions—half wanting a wheel-less L5 autonomous sci-fi pod, half wanting a realistic EV. Four project leaders and 10 years later, Project Titan was killed in 2024 with zero production cars shipped.

Not only will robots/SI do medical surgeries better than doctors, but they will also perform surgeries no human hands can do.
Neuralink built a surgical robot that performs tasks at a level of precision human hands simply cannot achieve Meet Neuralink's R1 surgical robot, designed to implant ultra-thin threads carrying over 1,000 electrodes directly into the human brain with extreme precision Here's how the R1 surgical robot works: • Five camera systems and advanced sensors map the brain's surface • Tracks brain movement and updates the mapping in real time • Identifies and avoids tiny blood vessels • Uses a needle thinner than a human hair to insert electrode threads precisely, one by one • It achieves a thread insertion cycle of just 1.5 seconds, an 11x improvement over the earlier system This extraordinary level of precision is helping make brain-computer interfaces a reality, enabling people with paralysis to control computers and interact with the world using only their thoughts This is the technology that will help people with paralysis regain their independence And it's bringing hope to millions around the world

Gates & Musk Being from a different era caused this drastically divergent views of the world. Gates came from the personal computing era where setting the industry standard meant absolute control. That's where he spent his life on. Resource control. Gates had to control the OS ecosystem so software developers had to play by Microsoft's rules. He had to secure market infrastructure. Elon came from a drastically different world. He came from mature industries (resources already established & controlled by others such as aerospace, automotive, energy). So, to break through, Elon needed creative disruption. Through first-principle thinking he discarded power structures and breaks down problems to fundamental truths. He had to create new systems, new supply chains. Completely different ideology. FWIW, I'm on the side of creators. In the age of infinite opportunities and abundance, we need creators.
Today, two visions of the world are colliding. And Bill Gates is probably the clearest example. On one side, the people who build. On the other, the people who manage. For 30 years, Gates has presented himself as the man who wants to save the world. But look closely at how it actually works. His philanthropy is first and foremost a reputation machine. Millions poured into media, massive funding for supranational organizations, a presence everywhere the narrative gets written. When you fund the people who write the story, the story is rarely hard on you. Then there's the model itself. Foundations, NGOs, grants. A system where money flows, reports pile up, conferences follow one after another, but the problem never actually needs to be solved. Because a solved problem is a cause that disappears. Grants keep the problem alive. Entrepreneurs kill it. The Elon Musk episode sums it all up. In 2022, Gates reaches out to Musk to talk about philanthropy and climate. Musk asks him one question: do you still have a half-billion-dollar short position against Tesla? Gates replies: sorry to say I haven't closed it out. Read that again. The man who wants to save the planet from climate change was betting hundreds of millions on the collapse of the company that did more than anyone to electrify global transportation. And he was asking its founder to back his climate vision. Musk said no. Obviously. Because underneath, these are two irreconcilable philosophies. Musk believes we need more. More energy, more humans, more planets. Abundance as the answer. Gates believes we need to manage. Consume less, emit less, have fewer children. Ration, regulate, control. It's Malthus for the modern age: the conviction that humanity is a problem to contain rather than a force to unleash. Bill Gates is the pure, sick product of our era. A society that rewards the appearance of goodness over goodness itself. That prefers the press release to the result. The charity gala to the factory. And deep down, I find this man profoundly sad. To have had so much money, so much power, and to choose to manage the world instead of building it.

What LLMs are like: ChatGPT - unpredictable, can be chaotic, verbal diarrhea at any time. Claude - you have to be careful and watch what you say. they word/though-police you. Grok - just a chill dude helping you out. no gimmicks, no bs.
