📢Some news from me: I've written a book with the erudite & eloquent Fintan O'Toole in which we each argue for - and then against - Irish unity, setting out objectively what seem to us each side's best arguments, and the issues people across the island of Ireland should consider.

Exactly a year today @SJAMcBride for the launch, every prediction has come true and service hasn’t changed. Nowhere more obvious than GP to be so fundamental to new model, to prevention and proactive care and to shift to out of hospital care, but has instead been decimated
Replying to @SJAMcBride
A decade ago today, Prof Rafael Bengoa delivered his seminal health report; much has been ignored. 📉Then, 226,000 people were waiting for outpatient treatment; now 527,000 are. 🔻Then, 67% of patients referred for urgent cancer treatment got started in 62 days; now just 28% do.

Northern Ireland's collapsing health service is a scandal; Stormont knew this would happen - and has allowed it. Vast sums have been paid to temporary staff to prop up a system MLAs admitted a decade ago was unsustainable. Now even that isn’t working. belfasttelegraph.co.uk/sunda…

Rhinos, Provos and loyalist terror bosses: Northern Ireland has become the land of the absurd where words have lost their meaning. Society is pretending all is well, when deeply abnormal behaviour has become not only acceptable but encouraged. belfasttelegraph.co.uk/comme…

😭 great to see.. what a hero.
World-leading cardiac surgeon Asif Hasan was surrounded by the children who received the gift of life thanks to his unerring skills at the emotional climax of another memorable Pride of Britain ceremony. 🥹 Now 70 years old, Mr Hasan has just retired after 35 years of service at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne, but just after receiving his Lifetime Achievement Award, he had an extra special surprise: a cast of patients who would not be alive without him. ❤️

Stormont descends into chaos as Michelle O’Neill walks out, leaving Emma Little-Pengelly unable to continue: After O'Neill belatedly agrees to attend scrutiny committee, FM-dFM chasm is impossible to conceal or deny. This is now government in name only. belfasttelegraph.co.uk/comme…

Jeffrey Donaldson’s incessant trips to the developing world raise dark new questions about shadow career abroad: DUP MP visited African country 10 times in less than 3 years, helped flog weapons alongside a British general & worked with special forces man. belfasttelegraph.co.uk/sunda…

London shouldn’t give Stormont any more money - extra cash has been perversely making things worse for the public. The Executive is an emperor with no clothes: It’s strutting around buck naked and far too many people who know this are silent. belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/…

While the DUP was losing its fight against the Brexit 'backstop', Donaldson was being flown in & out of a dangerous 'amber zone' where two medical facilities were ready to treat him if attacked, was guarded by elite forces and was paid to help the MoD meet its strategic goals.

Despite its bluster, the DUP knows the Union they loved has gone, & it’s unlikely to return. That doesn’t mean the Union’s over, but it will be different – different in a way they didn’t foresee, & don’t want, but might never be able to change – & which they brought on themselves

Apologies to Sir Chris Bryant for inadvertently referring to him as 'Sir Christ Bryant' in my email newsletter last night. Although I'm sure he's been called worse, the correct version, minus Biblical title, is now online.
