I was speaking with my US friend when the conversation slowly shifted to cancer medicines.
And I was shocked to discover that the US wholesale list price of the same medicine was around ₹12.87 LAKH ($13,515), while its revised MRP in India is just ₹2,720 ($29).
Indian price was earlier ₹40,421.33. modi government's price intervention has brought it down to ₹2,720, effective November 9.
I genuinely don't understand this. People say "US this, US that."
But what kind of pricing is this? How is an ordinary patient supposed to afford such expensive medicines?
I hope the Indian government extends such price interventions to as many essential medicines as possible and, more importantly, ensures that the benefits actually reach patients.

World Bank: India has recorded "one of the fastest poverty declines in the world" 🇮🇳
The October 2026 World Bank Poverty and Equity Brief, released this week:
📉 Extreme poverty fell from 27.1% (2011) to 2.6% (2023)
👥 496 million Indians were lifted out of poverty in 12 years
For four decades after Independence, extreme poverty fell by only 15 points.
Since 2010, it has fallen by 25 points in 16 years.
What the World Bank credits:
→ Strong consumption growth
→ Rising employment, especially among rural women
→ Expanded social transfers, including food subsidies
For most of modern history, extreme poverty was the norm in India.
Today it is close to vanishing.
