We had a great time hosting this year’s Central Coast Explorer Competition at Atascadero High School on Saturday! Teams from 12 agencies across California came together for a day of challenging scenarios, friendly competition, and teamwork. Events like this are about more than competition. They’re an opportunity to bring agencies and communities together, invest in the next generation, and support young people exploring a future in public service. A huge thank-you to all the teams who traveled to compete, our own Explorer Post for doing such a great job assisting with the event, and the many staff members and volunteers who gave their time to make this day possible. We’re proud to be part of a community that encourages young people to learn, grow, and find ways to serve others. Congratulations to all the Explorers who participated, and we hope to welcome everyone back next year!

Last week, we were honored to host the California Jail Programs Association (CJPA) Fall Conference here in San Luis Obispo County! The conference brought together professionals from across California to share knowledge, strengthen partnerships, and explore ways to improve programs and services within our jails. We were proud to have several of our own present, including Correctional Captain Mayes, Correctional Lieutenant Willey, Sergeant Slaughter, Correctional Sergeant Huskey, our CalAIM Reentry Team, and Jail Programs staff. Our CalAIM Reentry Team helps connect eligible individuals leaving custody with health care and supportive services to support their transition back into the community. Two individuals also courageously shared their lived experiences, offering valuable perspectives that remind us of the real people behind this work. Thank you to everyone who joined us for this opportunity to learn from one another, build collaboration, and continue moving this important work forward across California.

The work doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. 🌙 Our jail operates 24/7, with correctional deputies working around the clock to keep daily operations running and maintain a safe environment for everyone in our facility. Night shift is an important part of that work, even when most of the community never sees it.

Some calls take us off the beaten path. Our Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Team is trained to reach places traditional patrol vehicles can’t, from navigating rugged terrain to helping people stranded in hard-to-reach areas. They also train alongside our K9s and specialized teams, bringing unique capabilities to some of the toughest environments in the county.

🚩 RED FLAG WARNINGS EXTENDED, AREAS UPDATED 🚩 Red Flag Warnings have been extended in parts of California, and affected areas have been updated as critical fire weather conditions continue. Warnings cover portions of the Sierra Nevada, Kern County Mountains, and Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Interior portions of San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties are also under a Red Flag Warning Friday from 3 a.m. to 6 p.m. In Lake County, a Fire Weather Watch remains in effect from late tonight through Friday afternoon. Strong winds and low humidity can allow fires to spread rapidly. Embers are a leading cause of home ignition during wildfires. Is your home ready? 🏠 Do a quick ember check before the winds pick up: CLOSE IT, CLEAR IT, MOVE IT. Beware that PGE is out in many San Luis Obispo County areas. If you approach a traffic signal that is blacked out, ALWAYS make a complete stop and proceed with caution. Slow down and be courteous to the many drivers in the area.

SCAM ALERT! The Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a scam targeting individuals in the South County area that has resulted in victims losing thousands of dollars. In both cases, the victims were contacted by suspects claiming that a family member had been arrested and that money was urgently needed to cover bail and other legal fees. The suspects posed as attorneys or other legal representatives to make the situation appear legitimate. To further convince the victims, the suspects arranged for someone pretending to be the arrested family member to speak with them over the phone. The victims were then instructed to withdraw large amounts of cash from their bank accounts, place the money in a box, and hand it over to a courier who arrived at their homes to collect it. In one case, the victim lost $16,000. In the second case, the victim lost nearly $10,000. In both incidents, the victims later contacted their actual family members and discovered they had never been arrested. By that time, the money was gone. These scams rely heavily on fear, urgency, and emotional manipulation. The suspects pressure victims into acting immediately, often keeping them on the phone throughout the entire process to prevent them from contacting family members or law enforcement to verify the story. The Sheriff's Office reminds the public that law enforcement will never call you to ask for money for any reason. If you receive a call claiming a loved one has been arrested and demanding immediate payment, hang up and contact the Sheriff's Office directly to verify the status of your family member. Residents should also be aware of several warning signs associated with these scams: Demands for immediate payment. Scammers create a sense of urgency to prevent victims from thinking clearly. Requests for cash payments. Never withdraw large amounts of cash to hand over to someone claiming to represent law enforcement or the courts. Pressure to remain on the phone. Scammers often refuse to let victims end the call so they cannot verify the information. Instructions to keep the situation secret. Scammers may discourage victims from speaking with other family members or friends. The Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Unit (MCU) is actively investigating both incidents to determine whether they are connected and whether additional crimes may be related to this scheme. Anyone who has experienced a similar scam or has information regarding these incidents is encouraged to contact the Sheriff's Office Detective Division at 805-781-4500. The Sheriff's Office also encourages residents to talk with their family members, friends, and neighbors about these scams so they recognize the warning signs and do not become victims themselves. Sharing this information could prevent someone from losing thousands of dollars.

The Sheriff's Office has issued a press release regarding a homicide in San Miguel. On 9-28-2026, Deputies responded to a report of shots fired in the 500 block of River Road in San Miguel. When Deputies arrived, they located a female victim inside the residence who had been shot multiple times. Deputies and medical personnel immediately began lifesaving measures, but the victim did not survive. Detectives responded to the scene and began an immediate investigation. The suspect, identified as 66-year-old Jose Sevilla Ruiz of San Miguel, had fled the location before Deputies arrived. Ruiz was believed to be driving a gold Ford F-150 pickup truck. Detectives began following up on leads, interviewing witnesses, and working to locate Ruiz. Based on the investigation, Detectives learned the shooting occurred following a domestic disturbance and verbal argument between Ruiz and the victim. Investigators also received information indicating Ruiz was traveling eastbound out of San Luis Obispo County. On 9-29-2026, at approximately 8:45 AM, Ruiz was located and taken into custody without incident in Wasco, California, by members of the Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Unit (SOU), with assistance from the Wasco Police Department and California Highway Patrol. Investigators believe this was an isolated incident, and there is no threat to the general public. No additional suspects are outstanding. The Sheriff’s Office did not issue an initial public statement while investigators and law enforcement personnel were actively working to locate the outstanding murder suspect. Releasing information prematurely could have compromised investigative strategies, alerted the suspect to law enforcement efforts, or otherwise interfered with the safe and successful apprehension of the suspect. The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with additional information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Detective Division at 805-781-4500. No further information is available at this time.

Talk about a very special 911 call. 💙 Today, Sheriff’s Dispatcher Megan Penaflor helped a family through the delivery of a healthy baby boy, right over the phone. And in the sweetest twist, Megan is expecting a little one of her own. Our dispatchers are trained to handle all kinds of calls, often in some of the most stressful moments of someone’s life. Today, Megan put those skills to work helping bring a new life into the world. 🥹 One of our deputies later got to meet the newest little guy in person, making this 911 call even more special. From a voice on the phone to a face-to-face introduction, this is one call we won’t soon forget. Welcome to the world, little guy! 💙👶
