Today marks 4 years since the start of #Russia’s full-scale invasion of #Ukraine. @SMusaieva, @ngumenyuk and @LinaNUJU told CPJ about the work of journalists in #Ukraine, how it has changed, and the challenges they now face.

Thank you for your support @EerikNKross
Your words mean a lot to all of us who continue Georgiy Gongadze’s fight for truth. Thank you for this tribute and for your unwavering solidarity. This support is not only important for Ukraine, but for the whole democratic world !
25 years ago, on September 16, 2000, Ukrainian journalist Georgiy Gongadze was abducted and murdered. That tragic day became a symbol of the struggle for freedom of speech and for the democratic future of Ukraine.
The media outlet he founded — Ukrainska Pravda — has become far more than just a publication. It is a driving force of democratic change in Ukraine. It has exposed corruption, reported on human rights violations, documented Russia’s war crimes, and become one of the world’s key sources of truth about Ukraine.
Over these 25 years, three journalists of Ukrainska Pravda have given their lives for the right to tell the truth: Georgiy Gongadze, Pavel Sheremet, and Viktoria Roshchyna, who was killed in Russian captivity in 2024. Their sacrifice is a stark reminder that freedom of speech rests upon the blood and courage of those who are not afraid to go all the way.
Today, Ukraine is defending not only its own future but also the freedom of the whole of Europe. In this struggle, Ukrainska Pravda plays an outstanding role.
This is why I have officially submitted the nomination of Ukrainska Pravda for the Nobel Peace Prize. It is recognition of its contribution to Ukraine’s democratic transformation and to the defense of freedom of speech — which is the cornerstone of the democratic world.
For Estonia, a country that knows the price of freedom all too well, this step is an expression of solidarity with the Ukrainian people and of deep respect for the journalists who continue their work where truth itself is a weapon.

We are grateful to the @FbdnStories consortium and 45 journalists from 13 Ukrainian and foreign media outlets for their outstanding and shocking investigation.
Viktoriia Roschyna's bravery, commitment to journalism, and genuine concern for human life were extraordinary. This collaborative journalistic work emphasizes her heroism and the barbarism of her murder by the Russians, while also expanding her efforts to expose the horrific fate of thousands of civilian hostages held by Russia.
We urge the international community to respond to the findings of this investigation, which reveal systemic war crimes, human rights violations, abduction, torture, and murder in the Ukrainian territories temporarily occupied by Russia.
We specifically address @UNHumanRights, @UNHumanRightsUA, @UNESCO, @OSCE and @OSCE_RFoM, @coe @CoE_CPT and @CoEHumanRights, as well as @hrw, @amnesty, and @RSF_inter.
The issue of civilian hostages abducted and held by Russia requires increased international attention and immediate and strong response. Because what we are seeing right now is most likely the largest state-led civilian abduction operation in recent memory.
This has to be condemned and prosecuted. Russian criminals responsible for these horrific atrocities must be held accountable.
"You can only understand the full picture by going there."
Journalist Viktoriia Roshchyna risked everything to expose Russia's secret torture prisons. She became one of the ‘Ghost Detainees’ she sought to uncover.
Her investigation continues with our consortium's work. We also reveal the identities of several members of the Taganrog prison hierarchy and identify 29 Russian prisons where torture is systematic.
