✨Some news ✨
Today is my first day as Data Editor at @PhillyInquirer! I started my career learning from Inquirer reporters and it’s a real thrill to join a news organization I’ve admired for so long. So excited!
Send me your data — sstirling (at) inquirer (dot) com
SimPhilly rises. Giving a talk at @RowanUniversity on mapping in a few weeks, so decided to build an isometric model of Philly using public data. Progress!
Every time people beat up on Newark, NJ they are punching down on decades of systemic negligence, largely doled out to a Black community, in a still vibrant and culturally relevant city of hundreds of thousands.
But sure, that Newark joke is really funny, good, and needed.
Farewell and best wishes to Dawson Mercer and his legendary hockey hair flow. A great Devil from the get go.

After 10 games, Connor McDavid is on pace for 260 points with 31 points in 10 games.
Probably fantasy to think he'll keep this pace, but we're witnessing something truly special.
The take here is secondary to a legendary improv performance at the end by one of NYC's great unknown talents.
Inspired by the work of Boris Starkov on tiny.london and Andy Coenen on isometric.nyc, I'm attempting to build Pixeldelphia.
Go birding. inquirer.com/news/bird-watch…
eBird data can help spot the effects of climate change. At the Jersey Shore, sightings of white ibis are up as warmer conditions make the area more hospitable. Sightings of the saltmarsh sparrow, black skimmer and piping plover are down, as sea level rise invades their nests
The story explicitly notes that all requests for comment during reporting were funneled back to the State Department, who did not reply.
Rubio bristled at questions about WSJ’s Guilfoyle story before departing Greece. “I’m not going to comment.” Video via @ralexdc
I found out this morning my daughter calls coffins "wooden vampire beds" and I think I'm going to let her hang onto that one for a while.
It appears this is being restored here, though not all the detail pages work yet:

Cheers, @njdotcom.
NJ.com has stopped supporting the Force Report, one of the most comprehensive, public databases of police use-of-force ever built.

As a member of this project, I'm going to work to get this data back online. What a damn shame though.
Proud to be at a news organization where reporters help set the rules for how AI is used.
🤖 No AI generated imagery/videos
🤖 No AI mimicking employees
🤖 Right to remove byline from any AI-content
🤖 A guild-staffed advisory committee

Cheers to @BriVannozziNJ and everyone at @NJSpotlightNews. This newscast always punched above its weight on shoestring support. They were a beacon in NJ.
It's a bittersweet day, but I hope the new era of public media in NJ can build on this legacy.
