when we first started working with @Stacks, hardly anyone knew you could build on Bitcoin.
now, over 100,000 developers and several @easya_app x @Stacks hackathons later, it’s clear that if you want to build on Bitcoin, you need to build with Stacks 🔥
been absolutely epic bringing our gigabrain devs to stacks.
2025 is going to be even bigger 🚀
🚨 PSA: over 101,800 developers have now learnt about @Stacks on EasyA 🔥
This makes our Stacks challenges some of our most popular to date 💪

Bitcoin has asserted itself in the financial mainstream.
It's amazing, and expected, and great for the price of BTC - it is also foreshadowing the era of Bitcoin L2s.
Bitcoin's current Wall Street'ization is a prelude of the ultimate need for BitcoinL2s. BTC is a new global monetary asset class with product market fit as a store of value. Just like with the US dollar, there is an inherent need to put that value to work as a productive asset. Lend it, borrow against it, earn basic interest on it, trade it - basically optimize and leverage its value in a range of ways, whichever you are most comfortable with!
So now in 'tradfi' you have all these financial trappings (if you will) emerging to capitalize on the value of and demand for Bitcoin - ETFs, options & derivatives, collateral to take out $USD loans, and more.
Yes, this is what the people want and need - and there will be so much more - but do you really think this system is ultimately going to be built on old rails with central intermediaries abound?
This is just a transitional phase - it will be built on decentralized Bitcoin layers like @Stacks and others.
BitcoinL2s FTW 🟧🚀

the foundations of nakamoto working as expected. next focus: some performance improvements before sBTC to get complex contracts the faster speeds. lfg 🟧

stacks nakamoto went live two days ago. let’s dive in to the new nakamoto rules and upcoming performance improvements.
there are two main things that went live:
(a) bitcoin finality meaning that stacks got a massive security budget upgrade and 100% bitcoin hashpower now secures transaction ordering and reorgs (once stacks blocks get bitcoin confirmations).
(b) stacks blocks are decoupled from bitcoin blocks and stacks can produce blocks faster than bitcoin. in the screenshot below a bitcoin block came 4 mins ago and stacks had 14 more blocks in that time. this is particularly useful when bitcoin blocks take 40+ mins. stacks can give users a consistent and fast UX and settle on bitcoin blocks as they arrive.
this was a massive consensus upgrade, a completely new system and consensus rules took over and the transition/upgrade went as smoothly as we could’ve hoped.
this release was focused on safety and getting the foundations of nakamoto live (the bulk of the work). there are several performance improvements that can be made. core devs decided to ship performance improvements incrementally in coming weeks for two reasons:
(1) users and builders have been eagerly waiting for nakamoto and attempting to include more performance improvements would mean waiting longer for launch. sbtc needs nakamoto live and no one wants to push back sbtc launch.
(2) nakamoto on mainnet now gives real world data to core devs which is extremely helpful for optimizing performance improvements.
currently, simpler contract calls are seeing 50x latency improvements but complex contract calls are hitting compute limits. there are several performance optimizations to improve these limits.
most of the performance improvements are not consensus breaking and can be shipped quickly as normal node upgrades. below is a partial list of some of these:
- stacks has a compute budget in-between two bitcoin blocks. when that budget is used up by contracts, especially by complex contracts, then miners can request a compute budget refresh called “tenure extend”. this is especially helpful when bitcoin blocks take a long time to arrive. tenure extend is currently not live and is in-pipeline to go live.
- with nakamoto, signers and miners need to have well-connected nodes and ensure that they are always working on chain-tip (the latest block). minor software and devops improvements are on-going that’d help block production and performance.
- clarity vm needs a refresh of cost functions after nakamoto and on-going benchmarking especially with real mainnet data will help with this. read count is one bottleneck that contract calls frequently hit and improvements to it can go a long way.
a full list of these performance improvements is on github here: github.com/stacks-network/st…
most of these can be shipped as normal node upgrades. more complex improvements like wasm will require future hardforks. the main take away is that nakamoto went live smoothly, this was the most complex part. in the coming weeks, leading up to sbtc launch, we should see some more updates that increase reliability and performance of block production. performance improvements are a never ending process and stacks will keep getting faster and better post nakamoto as the foundational work is done and live now.
the core devs deserve a huge shout out for a smooth launch. the focus now shifts to performance improvements while sbtc work is happening in parallel (by an independent team of devs). welcome to the post nakamoto world — onwards and upwards 🟧🚀

So much to say, but I think we should take a moment to really appreciate those who built on Stacks before Nakamoto.
What inspired @reubs_btc and the @LeoCoinSTX team to launch a 10k NFT collection on a network where confirmations took over 10 minutes?
Or @jackbinswitch and the ROO bros with Stacks Invaders?
What made @Welsh_Community’s CTO decide to launch a memecoin on a chain that wasn't exactly built for memes?
And then there’s @wrappednothing, @PepeCoinSTX, @GusTheStacks, and so many others.
What sparked @StackingDao’s vision for liquid stacking on Stacks?
@VelarBTC, @ALEXLabBTC, @HermeticaFi, @ArkadikoFinance, @ZestProtocol, and again so many others.
So many things worked against them.
The tech wasn’t there yet. And let’s be real, the culture didn’t fully embrace their ideas either.
They could’ve gone elsewhere, where it was easier, but conviction held them.
They believed in what @Stacks could be long before it was easy or fast.
They chose Bitcoin, staying rooted here because they believed in something bigger.
And maybe, just as they chose Bitcoin, Bitcoin chose them too.
This is a tribute to everyone who chose to push forward when the road was rough. 🟧

NEWS: the stacks nakamoto upgrade is successfully live!
- 100% bitcoin finality for stacks l2 transactions. the tx ordering and reversal protected by full bitcoin hashpower. satoshi’s idea from 13 years ago.
- fast blocks give latency of seconds instead of 10-40 mins of bitcoin.
- stacks no longer forks separate from bitcoin. only way to fork stacks l2 is to reorg bitcoin itself.
- mining becomes much more efficient giving higher btc yield for stacks holders.
- nakamoto sets the foundations for sbtc to go live, expected 4-6 weeks from now.
- core devs shipped this version focused on network safety, given massive upgrade. in the coming weeks more optimizations for network bandwidth and latency will go live. these upgrades are not consensus critical and will be normal node upgrades.
kudos to the core devs for the 1.5 years plus of insane work. they successfully installed a new engine on a plane that was in-flight — legendary work 🟧🚀
