The lore with this one is that when I was designing priority for @linear icons, I really disliked the ones Jira used. The colored <<< chevrons were very ugly and looked like military ranks.
I tried a lot of abstract and less abstract concepts, and finally landed on "signals", like a cell signal. Like if the issue is low or high signal. The shape also becomes more visually full more important it is (more weight).
Conceptually signal is not a perfect for priorities but I liked it and it seems it took off.
Since then I've seen countless of products using it as indicator of a priority.

In Finland, NIMBYs used to oppose housing claiming it was "luxury housing" and only benefited the richest. Then Finland housing-maxxed, cost of housing fell and now the same NIMBYs oppose new housing claiming they are slums and only for the poor.

Both the theory and […] empirical evidence supported the premise that increasing the supply of housing reduces sales prices and rents or moderates their growth and therefore makes housing more affordable to low- and moderate-income families.
