I am who I am thanks to music. I am who I am thanks to music teachers. I am who I am thanks to learning an instrument. I am who I am thanks to playing in bands and singing in choirs. I am who I am thanks to the amazing people I’ve met through music. I am who I am thanks to music.

My education was transformed by music. The confidence I had in myself & my ability to learn, the friendships & support mechanisms I formed, the expression & creativity I developed, and the purpose it put in my step. Education should be holistic, and music educated all of me.

Learning a musical instrument, and being part of all the amazing things that come with it, truly is a transformational experience. I once gave a talk entitled “My parents gave me a saxophone, and it changed my life”. Here are 10 things learning the saxophone has taught me: 🧵

There’s a reason why so many people love music, and that’s because it brings so much to our lives. It brings great joy, great comfort, great connections, great friendships, great expression, great reflection, and great entertainment. All that music brings, makes our lives sing.

The people who taught me music taught me so much more than music. I’ll never be able to thank them enough for that. Music teaches us music, and so much more.

More often than not, being involved in music can be the making of a young person. The journey they undertake, and the experiences they have along the way, all contribute to instilling a sense of belief and confidence that sets them up for life. Making music helps to make us.

Playing in a band or singing in a choir is so much more than meets the eye. Yes, the music is beautiful, but it's everything else that makes music ensembles so life-changing. The friendships, the laughter, the camaraderie, absolutely everything. Music ensembles are priceless.
