Rev War Tales World Turned Upside Down 19 October 1781, Yorktown, Virginia. Brigadier General Charles O’Hara surrenders Lord Cornwallis’s army; some 7,000–8,000 British and Hessian troops march into captivity, ending the war’s last great campaign in America. On 19 October 1781, with Cornwallis pleading illness, Brigadier General Charles O’Hara led the garrison out of Yorktown between lines of French and American troops. He offered the sword first to Rochambeau, who directed him to Washington; Washington, in turn, had Major General Benjamin Lincoln accept it. About 7,200 soldiers and hundreds of sailors laid down their arms. Siege losses are commonly given as roughly 150–160 British killed and 300-plus wounded, about 60 French killed and nearly 200 wounded, and some 80–90 Americans killed and 300 wounded. The capitulation did not instantly end all fighting, but it broke British will in the main theater and made peace—and American independence—inevitable. #RevWar #History #AmRev #RevWarTales

Rev War Tales The Association 20 October 1774, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The First Continental Congress adopted the Continental Association, a colony-wide ban on trade with Britain in protest of the Coercive Acts. On 20 October 1774, delegates from twelve colonies signed the Continental Association, a compact calling for non-importation, non-consumption, and non-exportation. Imports from Britain and Ireland were to stop on 1 December 1774; exports would follow later if grievances went unanswered. Local committees were to enforce the boycott. The measure responded to the Coercive—or “Intolerable”—Acts, which had closed Boston’s port and altered Massachusetts government after the Tea Party. Framed as a peaceful economic weapon while still professing loyalty to the king, the Association united the colonies in a common policy and created enforcement networks that became revolutionary infrastructure. Britain did not yield; within months, the dispute moved from trade to arms. #RevWar #History #AmRev #RevWarTales

Rev War Tales Brooklyn Blues 28 August 1776, Brooklyn, New York. With the Continental Army pressed back against the East River after the previous day’s defeat, General George Washington ordered additional reinforcements to cross to Long Island. Among them was Colonel John Glover’s regiment of Marblehead fishermen (pictured) from Massachusetts. Washington also directed Major General William Heath to collect every available boat and barge for transport. Small skirmishes continued along the outer defensive lines as afternoon rain began to fall, setting the stage for the army’s critical next moves. #History #AmRev #RevWar #RevWarTales

Missi Dominici Faithless Friuli 776. Friuli, Northern Italy. While Charlemagne still fought to hold Saxony after the 775 campaign, Duke Hrodgaud of Friuli revolted. Left in office after the 774 conquest of the Lombard kingdom, he broke faith, threatened Frankish control of northern Italy, and Pope Hadrian I linked him to a wider Lombard-Byzantine plot. Charlemagne crossed the Alps in early 776, moved on Vicenza and Treviso, and crushed the revolt. Hrodgaud was killed. The king kept Easter at Treviso on 14 April, seized rebel cities, confiscated estates, and installed Frankish counts. He replaced the former duke with Marcarius and recast the frontier as the March of Friuli. The swift, personal intervention showed that Italy would not be a distant, loosely held prize but a core Carolingian realm, garrisoned and administered on Frankish lines. Resistance in the northeast was broken at once, and the peninsula remained firmly within the growing empire. #History #DarkAges #Medieval #MissiDominici

My 5th and 6th Great Grandfathers served in this battle, as did many other ancestors. Captain Alexander Breckenridge, his brothers Lieutenant Robert Breckenridge and Sgt. John Breckenridge and his 12-year-old son George Breckenridge served in the Battle of Kings Mountain. Captain Alexander Breckenridge commanded an Augusta Virginia Militia Company in the Virginia Militia Brigade of Col. William Campbell. Note: 12-year-old George Breckenridge was a Veteran of 2 years Militia service in his father's company, having participated in the Cherokee Campaign and numerous raids and skirmishes with Tories on the Virginia, Tennessee and Carolina border region. Young George served as “Horseshire”, an orderly responsible for the care of officer horses, baggage and field/camp equipment. The Augusta Militia was formed as Mounted Infantry, using horse's for transport in the rough mountain terrain, but fighting “Indian style” on foot.
Rev War Tales Go Tell It to the Mountain 7 October 1780, Kings Mountain, South Carolina. About 900 “Overmountain” and backcountry militia surrounded Major Patrick Ferguson’s Loyalist command of roughly 1,100 men atop Kings Mountain, just south of the North Carolina line. Fighting from cover on the slopes, the Patriots closed in from all sides. Ferguson was killed while leading a final attempt to break out; organized resistance collapsed. Loyalist losses are commonly reported as about 150–290 killed, some 160 wounded, and 600–700 captured. Patriot casualties totaled about 90. The destruction of Ferguson’s corps stunned Lord Cornwallis, then at Charlotte. He abandoned plans to press deeper into North Carolina and withdrew toward South Carolina. Kings Mountain marked a turning point in the southern war and revived Patriot resistance after the disaster at Camden. #RevWar #History #AmRev #RevWarTales

Rev War Tales The King’s Grant 18 June 1778, St. James’s Palace in London. King George III granted royal assent to a Treasury warrant authorizing payment of £27,457 12s 1½d to contractors Arnold Nesbitt, Adam Drummond, and Moses Franks. These prominent London merchants and politicians held the vital contract to victual British forces in North America. Amid the ongoing Revolutionary War—following France’s entry into the conflict—this payment covered provisions already delivered to sustain the army under Generals Howe and Clinton. The transaction underscored Britain’s massive logistical effort to feed and supply tens of thousands of troops across the Atlantic, an enormous financial burden that strained the royal treasury as the war expanded into a global contest. #RevWar #AmRev #History #RevWarTales
