I believe there's a good chance this is kayfabe... and by that, I absolutely mean Bill is in on it.
One reason they'd re-engage with this dance is to maintain an advantageous, yet contentious, relationship that helps Trump reach Maher's audience while also giving Bill cover from being seen as in the tank for him.
Personal insults aside, Bill has become somewhat of a redpill machine to the left. Many of them listen to what he says when they'd never otherwise hear it, or, if they did, dismiss it out of hand. From a psychological perspective, this actually makes a ton of sense to me.
You may not like Bill, but among people with significant followings on the left, and rather unlike most of his peers, he's definitely more grounded in sanity.
