Did Tolkien intend for the Balrog to have physical wings, or was it pure shadow?

Mythic Monday 🏺 — Circe
On the island of Aeaea, Odysseus encountered one of Greek myth’s most fascinating figures: Circe—goddess, enchantress, and mistress of transformation.
She turned his companions into swine… yet later became Odysseus’ host, lover, and guide.
So what is Circe really?
Villain, victim, temptress—or something far more complicated?

Readers added context they thought people might want to know

I thought it would be interesting to commemorate Día de los Muertos through the dark, dramatic world of Gustave Doré.
Black-and-white engraving, with only the marigolds allowed to break through the darkness.
A small visual thread on remembrance, death, and the idea that—for a little while—the distance between worlds grows thin. 🧵
A night of reunion
At the heart of Día de los Muertos is a beautiful idea: death does not erase our relationship with those we love.
Families remember the departed with photographs, food, candles, flowers, stories—and sometimes visits to their graves.
For one night, remembrance becomes reunion.
The dead are not forgotten. They are welcomed home.

The road between worlds
Día de los Muertos is not simply about mourning the dead—it is about welcoming them home.
Tradition holds that the spirits of loved ones may return during these days to visit the living.
I imagined that return as an enormous doorway: the dead making their journey toward the light, while a child waits with a single marigold.
The returning butterflies
Every autumn, millions of monarch butterflies arrive in central Mexico around the time of Día de los Muertos.
In traditions particularly associated with Michoacán, their arrival has long been connected with the souls of ancestors returning home.
So I imagined the monarchs emerging from Doré's darkness alongside the marigolds—two flashes of brilliant orange carrying the memory of the dead back into the world of the living.
Did you know Tolkien wrote about a queen who used cats as spies? 🐈⬛
Queen Berúthiel kept ten cats—nine black and one white. The black cats gathered secrets, while the white cat watched the other nine.
For these illustrations, I used my own cat, Tigger, as the model for her white cat. He's finally found his place in Middle-earth. 😂
Which scene is your favorite? And would you trust Tigger with your secrets?

Halloween in the Shire. 🎃🍂
No great quests tonight—just lanterns, costumes, apples, and a little mischief.
