#OTD 5th November 1605 Guido (Guy) Fawkes was caught in the cellars beneath Westminster with thirty-six barrels of gunpowder. He was part of a plot, led by Robert Catesby to blow up the House of Lords at the opening of Parliament on the 5th November, and to assassinate King James I. The plot was immortalised in a nursery rhyme: Remember, remember the fifth of November, Gunpowder treason and plot. We see no reason Why gunpowder treason Should ever be forgot! Guy Fawkes, guy, t'was his intent To blow up king and parliament. Three score barrels were laid below To prove old England's overthrow. By god's mercy he was catch'd With a darkened lantern and burning match. So, holler boys, holler boys, Let the bells ring. Holler boys, holler boys, God save the king. And what shall we do with him? Burn him! Picture Late 17th/ early 18th-century report of the plot. #TheGunPowderPlot #GuyFawkes #HousesofParliament #5thNovember #RememberRememberThe5thNovember #KingJamesIofEngland #KingJamesVIofScotland #Stuarts #History

Rather than importing, and then permanently settling, care workers from the third world, many of whom are unable to speak English and lack the necessary qualifications or attitude, the answer is quite straightforward. Get the millions of healthy Brits on benefits doing that work. That, or they lose their universal credit. If someone is fit, healthy, and capable of working they should be expected to take up suitable employment or training. That includes training and working in social care. For those who can work and simply refuse? The taxpayer should not be expected to fund that choice. Participate and contribute, or you will lose your benefits. We cannot keep importing workers to do jobs that capable people already living in Britain should be trained to do.

What’s happening in Poland? In a nutshell there are two political blocks: Law and Justice (PiS), led by Jarosław Kaczyński (nationalist, socially conservative, and skeptical of certain EU policies) who were in power from 2015 to 2023, and Donald Tusk’s Civic Coalition (and its partners), pro-Eu and have been in government since late 2023. PiS reformed the Constitutional Tribunal (court) which argues Polish law has precedence over some EU law. Tusk thinks all Polish law should be subordinate to EU law. Despite the Polish Constitution stating the Tribunal’s position is final, Tusk has been ignoring it. A Tusk appointed Judge on the Tribunal has - seemingly with Tusk’s support - suspended the President of the Tribunal and another PiS appointed judge, causing the present crisis. What is in fact behind this is that Donald Tusk is trying to make the upcoming 2027 elections all about the EU. He is ideologically committed to ensuring the EU dominates Poland while the PiS does not want to leave the EU, but want to retain some Polish autonomy. Tusk is trying to create a minor crisis and present it as the right’s fault and position himself as the guardian of Polish membership of the EU. It’s up to the Poles, but should they really trust a man who creates a crisis to help him make sure Poland becomes fully submissive to Brussels? I think not.

Nine year old Henry III was crowned at Gloucester today in 1216. With King John dead, rebel barons in revolt, and a French prince holding London, the boy Henry III was hastily crowned. Loyal regents led by William Marshal rallied the realm around him, and he went on to reign for 56 years.
