I've been following UK aid for a long time (>40 years) and the @commonsidc session with @FCDOGovUK Perm Sec yesterday (bit.ly/3TwvuwP) is about the most depressing I've come across. 0.5, lumps taken out for refugee 1st year costs. UK aid in crisis?

Wonderful to celebrate (23/4) the end (at least of this phase) of my 25 year career as a civil servant with brilliant, committed colleagues and a few surprise guests. It has been a privilege.
My parting messages for the challenges ahead:

On these "staggering costs of net zero", a reminder the Climate Change Committee estimates £1,300bn of investment costs by 2050 across the entire economy, offset by £990bn of savings.
Net cost of £310bn over thirty years.
So: around £10bn a year, or 0.5% of GDP
Via Mail on Sunday. Senior govt source said Lord Frost's departure had been prompted by intro of 'Plan B' Covid measures. That final straw after months of growing discontent over tax rises and the staggering cost of 'net zero' environmental policies. dailymail.co.uk/news/article…

Either we kill coal or coal will kill us. A phase down of coal won’t save the Maldives and island nations. #COP26

Wrapping #cop26
⬆️ double adaptation financing, maybe
⬆️ trigger for new, 1.5 aligned NDCs
⬆️ 5yr common time frames
⬆️ rulebook closed
⬆️ adaptation goal process
❌ phasing DOWN coal
❌ loss and damage DIALOGUE
Was it worth it? Only time will tell. For now #itisfinished

Glasgow Climate Pact:
-Paris Rulebook complete
-strengthen targets sooner
-2030 ambition process
-1st ref to coal & fossil fuel subsidies
-Global Goal on Adaptation prog
-x2 adaptation finance
-Loss & Damage network operationalised
-new💰goal process
-10yr empowerment prog
& more
We now have the Glasgow Climate Pact in place.
We have kept 1.5 within reach, but the pulse is weak.
Now countries must meet and deliver on the commitments made at #COP26.
