There are few better feelings than the peacefulness of walking in your neighborhood on a sunny day, the shade from trees and apartments/houses covering you, people passing by on their way to somewhere, feeling a part of something big yet simple

I never thought I’d see the phrase “fuck you, you dirty bitch” on a piece of political mail…but that’s the wild world of ANC elections for you.
From bike lane diatribes in Petworth to MAGA vibes in Brookland, I took a tour of the strangest ANC races on the ballot this year:
In 2021, D.C. passed landmark legislation seeking to make doula care free for low-income patients. Four years later, and local doulas say for all the fanfare, the program hasn't worked out in practice. Read @samdelgadoDC's full report: 51st.news/dc-doulas-free-med…

ANC elections tend to bring out DC's weird side, especially when they're competitive...I've been hearing some bizarre stories about some races this week, so tell me: is there an interesting race in your neighborhood that needs coverage?
DMs are open and my email is in bio!
In 2022, doula care became a Medicaid-covered service. In a city where over 3,000 births are Medicaid-funded, it was an exciting win for maternal health advocates.
But since then, the benefit hasn’t been working out in practice. Doulas told me why. ⬇️

Two years of building a local newsroom by and for D.C. residents. We couldn’t do it without our people-powered readership.
Here’s to many more years of covering this beautiful, complex city, and the people who call it home.
