🌱Seaweed forests of the south coast of Australia contain ~15% of the world's seaweed species 😲 These forests contribute uniquely to temperate reef ecosystem functions onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…, but little is known about how they are responding to climate change...

🌊1/Seaweed forests worldwide are changing rapidly due to climate change. Western Australia’s forests are dramatic examples of this, but what about the biodiversity hotspot on the south coast? Our latest historical ecology research finds out... 🧵

How effective are #MPAs for conserving #kelp #forests? Our perspective shows they can help with some drivers of loss like grazing, but often fail to protect against ocean warming and coastal darkening - 2 main reasons we are losing kelp forests globally! doi.org/10.1111/jpy.13446

Multi-scale stability of an intertidal kelp (Postelsia palmaeformis) near its
3 northern range edge through a period of prolonged heatwaves by Matthew Csordas and co-authors in @annbot
#openaccess article
👉 botany.fyi/3M7x2j

ALT The intertidal kelp species Postelsia palmaeformis appears to have maintained population stability in its northern range despite recent heatwaves in the northeast Pacific Ocean. This may be attributed to thermal buffering and wave exposure along the coastlines it inhabits, which have likely mitigated the impacts of climate change. The study emphasizes the significance of considering multiple spatial scales, dispersal capability, and local conditions when assessing species' responses to climate change.

The first global temperature data is in for the full month of September. This month was, in my professional opinion as a climate scientist – absolutely gobsmackingly bananas. JRA-55 beat the prior monthly record by over 0.5C, and was around 1.8C warmer than preindutrial levels.
