Excited to announce that colleagues & I have identified a new #concussion sign that's been hiding in plain sight. We named it Spontaneous Headshake After a Kinematic Event, or SHAAKE. Seen in movies & cartoons, it hasn't been in protocols, but should be. usnews.com/news/health-news/…

In our study, SHAAKE had a positive predictive value of 72%, so 3 out of 4 times you see it, it's due to concussion symptoms. Top 2 symptoms were:
1. Disorientation/confusion (25%)
2. A feeling like you needed to jumpstart your brain (23%)

All joking aside, there’s a reason we adhere so strictly to heat guidelines. Exertional heat stroke is 100% preventable and 100% treatable when recognized. Prevention, of course, is the gold standard and we do what we can to look after our kids at all costs.
Exertional heat stroke is one of three leading causes of death in high school sports in the U.S., according to the CEO of @K_S_Institute.
Amid record-setting high temperatures, one New Jersey high school says preventing the heat illness is a top priority.
