It isn't 'left wing' to destroy the public realm. These aren't just 'old buildings'. They belong to the whole community, often built through their collective resources and certainly maintained by them.
Socialism, at least my tradition, is in part about conserving and strengthening the public realm for the common good. It is not about destruction.
It shows appreciation for civic beauty and pride, a sense of history, connection with those before us, duty for those after us, the importance of place and belonging. The things that make life worth living, being available as widely as possible.
Individualists destroy. Selfish utilitarians have no concern for such things. Anarchy breeds inequality, as those with means will shut themselves away and the rest are left to suffer.

Did you know that, when British people arrived on the uninhabited Falkland Islands, Argentina didn’t actually exist?
Thanks to people from across the world who are defending the Falkland Islanders’ right to self determination & peace.

🏴 Happy 1099th Birthday England 🏴
On 12th July, 927AD, King Æthelstan secured control over the last Viking kingdom of Northumbria and united the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms under one ruler, becoming the first King of a united England.
Terrible day for Norway.
25th August 2019. Enough said.
Stokes Headingley Ashes highlights 1-minute
One of England's all-time greatest captains, Ben Stokes, has decided to retire from international cricket at the end of this Test match.
Ben, you have been the most inspirational captain, leader and legend this team could have ever hoped for.
We love you so much and wish you all the best in your retirement ❤️
England will never be the same again.

Thing is, for all my support for expanding public ownership, industrial strategy, investment-led growth, trade union power etc. etc., I can just no longer bring myself to be part of a Corbynite/Green Party moral universe where a significant chunk of your cohort (not all, but more than a tiny, insignificant few) actually genuinely believe:
Mentally ill people shooting a Rightwing politician or commentator to death = GOOD✅
Police kicking a knife-wielding antisemitic terrorist in an attempt to incapacitate them = BAD🛑

The Daily Mirror, 1978, the first year Britain got a bank holiday to mark ‘May Day’.
Marx’s grave was defaced. Shopkeepers vowed to stay open in defiance of an “un-British” or “communist” holiday. Conservative clubs flew flags at half mast… 🤭

It’s all too clear that a country in which Jews are attacked on the streets simply because they are Jewish, synagogues need to employ security, & anti-Semitic slogans & images are paraded through city centres or exhibited in art galleries is exactly what we’ve become.
Here come the cliches…..
‘This is not who we are as country’ ‘this has no place in british society’ and the rest….
Aptly done

Europeans, after a four day weekend, reading about just how absolutely furious America is with them.
Most Europeans have no idea how absolutely furious with Europe America is.
This is not just another disagreement.
Betrayal is not something you just let slide. And the mouthy responses from Europeans are pouring gas on that fire.
They have misjudged the situation gravely & it will have grave consequences for Europe— economically AND militarily.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Recent polls show 59% of Americans believe the US benefits from NATO, though support among Republicans has dropped to 38% from 49% last year. 59% say using force in Iran was the wrong decision, indicating divided views rather than universal fury at Europe.

“Young people haven’t paid in.”
Absolute rubbish.
Young people today are paying more than ever, higher taxes, higher rents, less job security and unaffordable housing.
And the triple lock? It’s not paid for. It’s debt.
So young people will pay for it now, and will pay again later.
The message is clear. Young people are yet again expected to foot the bill.

The BoE will inevitably respond to an inflationary supply shock by raising interest %. Engineering a recession, making people poorer to quash demand will have ~0/negative effect on the fundamental cause of the problem – UK dependence on volatile international energy markets.
Instead, BoE should halt QT, easing pressure on government borrowing costs + facilitate new bond issuance for GB Energy/NWF, focusing on a breakneck move towards UK energy independence/ abundance/ resilience through public-private investment in:
👉new N. Sea O&G extraction (the "there's none left" crowd should back themselves & lift the ban on new licenses if they actually believe their own claims – see @EdConwaySky's excellent vid.)
👉British nuclear/SMR rollout
👉British renewable tech supply chains/grid upgrades
👉Onshore shale gas exploration
No Truss-style £150BN bills subsidy. Instead, a £150BN investment in the next half century of homemade energy production.

"See that little stream — we could walk to it in two minutes. It took the British a month to walk to it — a whole empire walking very slowly, dying in front and pushing forward behind. And another empire walked very slowly backward a few inches a day, leaving the dead like a million bloody rugs. No Europeans will ever do that again in this generation.”
"Why, they’ve only just quit over in Turkey,” said Abe. “And in Morocco —”
“That’s different. This western-front business couldn’t be done again, not for a long time. The young men think they could do it but they couldn’t. They could fight the first Marne again but not this. This took religion and years of plenty and tremendous sureties and the exact relation that existed between the classes. The Russians and Italians weren’t any good on this front. You had to have a whole-souled sentimental equipment going back further than you could remember. You had to remember Christmas, and postcards of the Crown Prince and his fiancée, and little cafés in Valence and beer gardens in Unter den Linden and weddings at the mairie, and going to the Derby, and your grandfather’s whiskers.”
“General Grant invented this kind of battle at Petersburg in sixty- five.”
“No, he didn’t — he just invented mass butchery. This kind of battle was invented by Lewis Carroll and Jules Verne and whoever wrote Undine, and country deacons bowling and marraines in Marseilles and girls seduced in the back lanes of Wurtemburg and Westphalia. Why, this was a love battle — there was a century of middle-class love spent here. This was the last love battle.
20% of Old Etonians, the men expected to govern Britain and trained from birth to do so, died in the war
The best men of every class perished in Flanders, as it was they who rallied to the colors immediately and were chewed up for years
The Great War was probably the most dysgenic conflict in history, as the weak or cowardly remained behind the lines as the strong and brave perished on a titanic scale
It is such a tragedy
