The most prominent innovation of Eastern Aramaic is the replacement of the prefix <y> by <n> in 3ms prefix forms. You might recognize it from the Lord's prayer. 1/8

What script should be used for a revival of Aramaic? Modern Western Aramaic (aka Western Neo Aramaic) is a purely spoken language in Maaloula and two nearby towns. In academic linguistics, it is simply transcribed in Latin script, and some Maaloula natives did this as well. The Aramaic Language Institute established in Maaloula at first adopted the square script but abandoned it for political reasons because that same script is also used for Hebrew (I don't know if this is due to pressure from the Assad government). This script would have been the best choice. This is how all other Aramaic dialects (other than Classical Syriac) are transcribed (for example, at cal.huc.edu/) and it is in fact originally an Aramaic script. In late Biblical times, Judeans adopted this Aramaic script to write Hebrew because it was the standard script when Aramaic was the lingua franca, in contrast to the Old Hebrew script used in preexilic times and which was continued by the Samaritans. It is the script Jesus would have used. The Syriac script is a later development of this script. Using this script means being able to use thousands of Hebrew fonts in various styles and to rely on cross linguistic support already available on many apps and systems. In contrast, the Syriac script generally requires downloading specialized fonts with no real choice of style and has limited support across apps. It also means that more people will recognize this script rather than having to learn a new script which would be an obstacle. It will allow for more collaboration across both Israel and Lebanon. Today, many Jewish schoolchildren learn Rashi script in school alongside Modern Hebrew script. The same can be done for Syriac vs Modern Aramaic - the Syriac retained and learned as a secondary and liturgical script, while the square Aramaic script used for common communications

The Kabbalist Rabbi Naphtali ben Yosef of Tzfat (Safed) came to teach in Venice in 1601. When he passed away just a year later, Rabbi Leon of Modena euologized him, noting, "His discussions were always in the Holy Tongue, speaking fluently with clarity." hebrewbooks.org/pdfpager.asp…

Composing in Tiberias in the early 9th century under Islamic occupation, the poet Rabbi Pinhas haKohen didn't realize Jordan was off limits for Jews. They shall express your awes to be rewarded, And shall level the desert as if it was the garden of Eden, Memory also for "those whom I have oppressed" (Israelites based on 1 Sam 12:3) to help them, I will remember you from the land of the Jordan In this poem/piyyut which supplements the shofar order of Memories/Zikhronot, each stanza recounts a Memory. He quotes Ps 42:7 to describe himself at the shores of the Kinneret as living in the "land of the Jordan" and contextualizing the ancient prophecies for his listeners to revive the desert. From the rhyme of this stanza we also see the form להסעידן "to help them (the oppresssd Israelites)" with the 3rd m pl pronominal suffix הֶם -(h)ɛm is rhymed with -en. This shows that his Hebrew was the five vowel Hebrew variant unlike the 7 vowel Tiberian Hebrew (even though he lived in Tiberias) and included the neutralization of m/n, known from the latest stages of spoken Hebrew

One of the earliest Midrashic compositions, Sifre on Deuteronomy interprets Deut 11:19 which says "And you are to teach these your children speaking of these" to mean that one should teach a son to speak in Hebrew from the moment he can speak. This early Midrash was composed when Hebrew was still spoken but it served many later generations. It was used by Rashi to intepret Deuteronomy 11:19 and the Rambam also ruled that teaching Hebrew speech was a commandment. Books for children were printed following this verse such as this one Hinukh Katan - "Education of the Little One". This printing dates from 1725 (although earlier versions are known) and the publication year is listed by highlighting respective letters from Deut 11:19. It includes a grammar and word list translations of Hebrew words into Yiddish nli.org.il/he/books/NNL_ALEP…
Unpopular opinion: All Jewish children - regardless of religious status - should be taught Hebrew and the Bible. Both belong to them as an inheritance. Adult Jews who keep it from them are thieves. Do not underestimate how this would strengthen the Jewish people worldwide.
