“The book’s concluding chapter provides the author’s summary of key propositions. Indian strategic thought has ancient roots and it has maintained amazing continuity. Indian thinkers reflected and propounded views on all the modern elements of statecraft. Dharma held the individual, society, the state and the cosmic order together. The author says, ‘The Mahabharata best epitomises India’s civilisational ethos through Krishna… Krishna’s ability to straddle between the idealist and realist represents the closest reflection of strategic dilemmas leaders are called upon to resolve’….” observes Dr. Arvind Gupta, while reviewing Vivek Chadha’s book, Mahabharata’s Strategic Insights: Navigating the Dharmic Compass, for the National Security Journal, Vol. 9, No. 4 (October-December 2026).

“The US decision to attack Iran has been based on a combination of strategic miscalculations and great power ambition. Trump interpreted Iranian restraint as incapacity, regional developments as American primacy, and domestic economic and social consternation in Iran as a sign of imminent regime collapse. These assumptions have collectively produced hubris on the part of the American administration….” analyses Dr. Vishwajeet Singh Akhawat, Research Associate at VIF, in his article, “The US-Iran War and the Reshaping of West Asia”, for the National Security Journal, Vol. 9, Issue 4 (October–December 2026).

“The US is currently engaged in wars on two fronts: in Europe, where with its support its European allies actively back Ukraine against Russia; and in West Asia, where it joined the war on Iran in support of Israel and then made it its own mission. Neither war was necessary. Both stem from American hubris rooted in the imperial ideology of “unipolarity”—the belief that the US should act as a global hegemon and that its liberal ideology, market economy, and democratic model represent the ideal form of the state. Hence, it must be replicated worldwide as components of a “liberal international order” (LIO) which would ensure peace, interdependence, and growth. In practice, however, the LIO was a deceptive order designed to serve core US foreign policy, security, and economic interests….” writes Prof. Sujit Dutta, in the Editor’s Note for the National Security Journal, Vol. 9, Issue 4 (October-December 2026).

“The close collaboration between Pakistan and China has a destabilising effect on regional security. This alliance creates a complex triangular deterrence structure, one that allows elements of sub-conventional warfare, conventional warfare and nuclear deterrence to exist in any crisis. It emboldens Pakistan to continue its policy against India under the nuclear shadow, while hybrid warfare and grey-zone tactics become increasingly prominent, raising the risk of uncontrolled escalation……” analyses Air Marshal Rajesh Kumar (Retd.), in his essay, “China-Pakistan Strategic Alliance: Military and Security Implications”, for the National Security Journal, Vol. 9, Issue 4 (October–December 2026).

“Pakistan’s pursuit of a claimed Sea-Based Strategic Deterrence (SBSD) introduces a new layer of complexity into South Asia’s evolving nuclear equation and has the potential to increase instability in the maritime domain. By seeking a notional second-strike capability at sea, Islamabad aims to complete a rudimentary nuclear triad. However, the operational credibility of this capability remains limited and its strategic consequences potentially destabilising…..” analyses Vice Admiral Satish Soni (Retd.), in his essay for the National Security Journal, Vol. 9, Issue 4 (October-December 2026).

“The modern battlefield is marked by profound changes in transparency driven by technological advancements. Drones, radars, satellites and ground-emplaced sensors now enable continuous, near-real-time surveillance of the battlespace. Battlefield Transparency (BFT) has facilitated acquisition, exploitation and geo-location and provided near-real-time awareness of the operational environment in the Russia-Ukraine War. The US-Iran conflict has transformed the Middle East into a highly visible, AI-driven and transparent battlefield….” analyses Lt. Gen. “Indian military has been highlighting the threats of a Dual Front war for the past many decades. However, the manifestation of such a threat in the form of a second front being opened, as explained in the case of Germany, seems remote. There are apparently a number of reasons for this. Firstly, the friendship between Pakistan and China may be higher than the Himalayas and deeper than the oceans, but the two nations are not bound by any Mutual Defence Treaty or Agreement as yet. There is no binding obligation to enter into a war to support the other nation.Secondly, war and warfare have evolved since the two world wars. One need not open up a front in the classic manner to be at war……” analyses General Anil Chauhan, in his essay for the National Security Journal, Vol. 9, Issue 4 (October-December 2026).

“Nuclear arms control essentially requires negotiations with an adversary. In fact, the more adversarial the relationship, the greater the need for arms control to establish deterrence stability. However, the greater the hostility, the more difficult it is to engage meaningfully to arrive at constructive results. In order to resolve this Catch-22 situation, political statesmanship is required to look beyond immediate politics and benefits, and search for security of all sides. The US has stated that it will formulate new arms control instruments only if these can better reflect current nuclear realities. Obviously, it is looking to rope China into such arrangements, which would prove to be beneficial for India….” analyses Dr. Manpreet Sethi, in her article for the National Security Journal, Vol. 9, Issue 4 (October-December 2026).

Deeply saddened by the passing of Shri A. Balakrishnan Ji, who served as the All India President of Vivekananda Kendra.
Balakrishnan Ji devoted more than five decades of his life to the ideals of Swami Vivekananda and to the service of society. As one of the early Jeevanvratis of Vivekananda Kendra, he worked tirelessly across the country. He had a particularly deep association with the Northeast. He played an important role in educational, social and nation-building activities.
My heartfelt condolences to the entire Vivekananda Kendra family and his admirers. Om Shanti.
