Dear Peadar, Thank you for scrutinising this issue, it is testimony to your hard work at Aontu, no doubt reflected in your record opinion poll numbers. Well done. However, we would take issue with these numbers which were originally published on 27 January 2026 in a PQ response to FG Dep Noel McCarthy. The numbers show at least 13,000 of the applications in 2025 have not been determined (granted or rejected) which are separate to the 26,400 granted, though based on prior year’s records, most will ultimately be approved and not rejected. But look at the first line of the PQ response, “more than 30,000 citizenship certificates were issued” in 2025. That is consistent with a subsequent PQ which confirmed there were 31,244 certs issued. We have used the 31,244 as the most accurate representation of paper citizenships created in 2025, and we show the certs issued in our pinned infographic (below) which tries to show that the native Irish population is DECLINING, while the increase in Ireland’s population arises from the issuance of paper citizenships and non-Irish immigation and non-Irish natural increase; in simple terms, the number of people with irish citizenship (native Irish and paper citizenship) increased by 24,400 in the year to April 2026, while 31,244 paper citizenships were issued in 2025, directionally suggesting a decline in native Irish. You shouldn’t have to pay attention to a Tweet from some randomer off t’internet. Our mainstream media (RTE, Irish Times, Journal) should have been transmitting this to their audiences. Our think-tanks (ESRI, IIEA, Tasc, Progress Ireland) should have been scrutinising and reporting this. And our CSO should have had an infographic, or at least facilitate the analysis.
