Amanat Ali, Counsellor (Press) at the Pakistan Mission, delivered a national statement on Agenda Item 51: Question Relating to Information at the Fourth Committee of the UN General Assembly (UNGA-81). Here are key highlights of the statement ➡️ We commend the Department of Global Communications (DGC) for its continued efforts to promote an open, inclusive and participatory information ecosystem. ➡️ We meet at a time of profound geopolitical uncertainty, never-ending conflicts, rapid technological transformation and declining public trust in multilateral institutions. ➡️ In this environment, information is not merely a means of communication; it is also an instrument of empowerment, accountability, and peace. ➡️ DGC has a vital responsibility to communicate its work clearly, and credibly, ensuring balanced coverage of the decisions and resolutions of the Security Council and General Assembly, while highlighting their implementation and impact at the same time. ➡️ The global information landscape faces mounting challenges of disinformation, misinformation and hate speech. ➡️ Increasingly weaponized to polarize societies, manipulate public opinion and undermine trust, these phenomena are particularly dangerous in situations of conflict and foreign occupation. ➡️ Internet shutdowns, censorship, digital surveillance and restrictive media laws are employed to suppress legitimate voices, distort realities and delegitimize struggles for fundamental rights and self-determination. ➡️ We must intensify collective efforts to combat Islamophobia, racism, xenophobia and all forms of intolerance, while promoting peaceful coexistence and interfaith harmony. ➡️ While AI technology can accelerate development and expand access to knowledge, their misuse can facilitate deception, manipulate public opinion and undermine information integrity. ➡️ International cooperation is, therefore, essential to ensure their responsible, transparent and accountable use. ➡️ We must also address the growing concentration of influence among multinational technology corporations and digital platforms, whose opaque algorithms and content policies are increasingly shaping public discourse. ➡️ We reiterate the importance of implementing General Assembly resolution 76/227 on countering disinformation, which was sponsored by Pakistan among others. ➡️ DGC should pursue a sustained strategic communications campaign, in collaboration with Member States and through UN Information Centres, to showcase the tangible contributions of the United Nations to peace, security and sustainable development. ➡️ Multilingualism remains a core element of the UN information system. We urge the DGC to allocate more resources to promote multilingualism in an attempt to reduce the disparity in the use of all official languages. ➡️ Pakistan stands ready to work constructively with DGC and all Member States towards a credible, inclusive and responsible global information environment.

The Afghan Taliban regime’s spokesperson has once again resorted to rhetoric and diversion instead of addressing the well-documented terrorist threat emanating from Afghan territory. Attempts to shift attention towards Pakistan’s internal affairs cannot conceal the regime’s failure to prevent terrorist groups from using Afghanistan to plan and launch attacks against Pakistan. The UN Security Council’s Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team, in its Sixteenth Report (S/2025/796), estimated that approximately 6,000 TTP fighters were present in Afghanistan and reported Taliban support to the group. These findings cannot credibly be dismissed as Pakistani propaganda. The regime must address this documented threat through concrete action rather than denial. The regime’s attempts to lecture others on governance and citizens’ rights also ring hollow in the face of its own record, particularly its continued restrictions on girls’ education and violations of fundamental human rights. Pakistan remains committed to dialogue, but meaningful progress requires the Afghan Taliban regime to honour its counterterrorism commitments and take verifiable action against terrorist sanctuaries and support networks. Pakistan will take all necessary measures, in accordance with international law, to protect its citizens, defend its sovereignty and safeguard its territorial integrity. The responsibility to end the use of Afghan territory for attacks against Pakistan rests squarely with the regime.

Update-Ghazab lil Haq Islamabad, 24 September 2026; Pakistan condemns in the strongest possible terms the deliberate and unlawful incursion into Pakistan by drones on 23 September 2026, launched from Afghan territory. This constitutes a blatant violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and is a grave and unacceptable act of aggression. For years, Pakistan has repeatedly conveyed its grave concerns to the Afghan Taliban regime and its interlocutors regarding the continued presence of terrorist sanctuaries and their support networks on Afghan soil. Instead of dismantling these networks and taking credible and verifiable action against those using Afghan territory to perpetrate terrorism against Pakistan, the Afghan Taliban regime has chosen to escalate the situation through hostile drone operations against Pakistan. Pakistan’s Air Defence systems detected, tracked and neutralised all intruding platforms before they could reach any of their intended targets, comprehensively thwarting the attempted attack. In exercise of its sovereign right to self-defence, Pakistan conducted precision aerial and drone strikes against 10 locations in Afghanistan used for launching and storing these drones. The strikes were deliberate, precise, calibrated and proportionate and strictly limited to identified military objectives directly linked to the attempted attacks against Pakistan. Pakistan will neither accept nor tolerate attacks launched from Afghan territory, whether by terrorist groups or by the Afghan Taliban regime itself. Any violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty will be met with an immediate and decisive response. Threats, denials or attempts to deflect responsibility by Afghan Taliban will neither alter the facts nor constrain Pakistan’s inherent right to defend its territory, its people and its national security. Pakistan calls upon the Afghan Taliban regime to immediately cease all hostile activity against Pakistan and fulfil its international obligations by taking effective, concrete, verifiable and sustained action against terrorist entities operating from Afghan soil. Afghan territory must not be used to launch attacks or conduct hostile operations against Pakistan. Pakistan does not seek escalation and remains committed to regional peace, dialogue and constructive engagement. This commitment must not be mistaken for weakness or an unlimited tolerance of hostile actions. Pakistan will defend its sovereignty, territorial integrity and the lives of its citizens with full resolve and will take all necessary measures to protect them. Any further provocative act by Afghan Taliban will be responded with firm and resolute response.

I am honoured to announce that the historic ‘Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding’ has been electronically signed today between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Memorandum has been signed by honourable Presidents of both the countries and also endorsed by me as the mediator. The signing of this agreement at the highest level of the respective governments demonstrates the commitment of both sides to a diplomatic resolution of the conflict. Islamabad MoU shall enter into force with immediate effect and as a first step, Islamic Republic of Iran will instantly reopen the Strait of Hormuz and the United States of America will immediately lift the naval blockade. I offer my heartfelt congratulations and sincere appreciation to the President of the United States, Donald J. Trump whose steadfast commitment to diplomacy and preference for peaceful resolution have once again helped end a conflict that could have led to devastating consequences for the region and beyond. I also commend the dedication and tireless efforts of the United States negotiating team, including J.D.
