Former Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn skipped $14 million in bail by escaping Japan in a box. The two Americans who got him out went to prison. He didn’t. He saved Nissan from bankruptcy and built the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance into the biggest car group in the world. In November 2018, prosecutors arrested him at a Tokyo airport. The charges: underreporting his pay and using Nissan money for personal gain. He spent months in a Tokyo detention center. When he finally got bail, he wasn’t allowed to see or speak to his wife. In Japan, prosecutors win 99.4% of cases. His trial could take years. He was facing up to 15 years in prison. So he planned an escape. December 2019. Ghosn walked out of his Tokyo home in disguise, took a bullet train to Osaka and climbed into a large audio equipment box with air holes punched in it. The box was loaded onto a private jet. He flew to Istanbul, then on to Lebanon, which doesn’t extradite its citizens. “The 30 minutes waiting in the box on the plane, waiting for it to take off, was probably the longest wait of my life,” he later told the BBC. The men who got him out were Michael Taylor, a former U.S. Army Green Beret, and his son Peter. Prosecutors said Ghosn paid them $1.3 million. The U.S. extradited them to Japan. Michael got 2 years in prison. Peter got 1 year and 8 months. Ghosn still lives in Lebanon. Interpol has a red notice out for him. Grizzly Bear K+lls Mother And Daughter While Hiking In Canada A 48-year-old woman and her 20-year-old daughter have d+ed following a suspected grizzly bear attack in British Columbia, Canada. The victims, identified as Jennifer Balcarras and Selah Reed, were reported missing on November 1 after failing to return from what was meant to be a short afternoon hike in Bella Coola. Their remains were discovered in a trail area during a search involving conservation officers and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). Balcarras was found on Monday, while her daughter was discovered on Tuesday. The British Columbia Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS) said evidence at the scene suggested an animal may have been involved. Officers are currently working to locate the bear or bears suspected of being responsible. BCCOS inspector Jeff Tyre said it was unclear whether one or multiple bears were involved. He added that any captured bear would be assessed and, if confirmed to have participated in the attack, would be put down in line with provincial wildlife conflict guidelines to protect public safety.
