Last Wednesday, my car dealership charged me $289 for a service I’d already said no to. I’d taken the car in for an oil change. The service advisor came out to the waiting area with a clipboard and a list of things it “could use.” One was a fuel system cleaning. $289. He said it was recommended at my mileage. I said no, just the oil change. He drew a line through that row and asked me to initial beside it. While he was talking to someone else, I took a photo of the sheet. I do that with anything I sign. Two hours later, he handed me the invoice. $347. I asked what the rest was for. “Fuel system cleaning. It’s already done.” I said I’d declined it. He said the technician must have seen it on the original list. I asked him to take it off. He leaned on the counter and smiled, like we were both being reasonable. “I can’t un-clean your engine. You’ve already got the benefit.”
