The barrier to entry for medical imaging deepfakes has officially vanished.
New research shows anyone with an internet connection can now use generalist AI to create "anatomically plausible" radiographs WITH abnormalities. Radiologists couldn't tell the difference. Neither could the AI models that created them. This democratizes the deepfake.
Why this matters:
- Legal/Insurance Fraud: Images used as "objective evidence" in claims can be easily fabricated.
- Model Collapse: AI training on synthetic data instead of biologic reality.
- Erosion of Trust: Patients questioning if their pathology is real or a "lucrative invention."
We can't rely on "expert eyes" anymore. We must move toward digital provenance - using cryptographic hashing and secure acquisition to bake trust into the system.

Thought-provoking study. Congratulations to the authors (Tordjman and Yuce et al)
The majority of radiologists and 4 LLMs were unable to differentiate synthetic, deepfake scans from real ones
